Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service is a local charity that provides specialist care and vital support to babies, children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families, across Berkshire and into surrounding counties. We currently support over 200 children and their families, but we are committed to growing our service and reaching out to every child and their family that needs us. Our approach is child and family-centred in order to provide the best possible care and support they need, as well as helping them create memories, for however long they have together. Our care services include Respite care, Specialist play, Symptom management, Family support, End of life care and Bereavement support. We provide care from our children’s hospice in Maidenhead as well as in the family home and the community, including hospitals and schools. The cost of running our vital service each year is over £3.05million and, with minimal government funding, we are almost entirely reliant on donations, fundraising and gifts in Wills. The charity was founded by John and Fiona Devine in memory of their son Alexander who sadly passed away from a rare brain tumour in 2006. Their personal experience led them to realise a desperate need for a local children’s hospice service with a hospice facility in Berkshire.

Today I had the privilege of attending Dr Fiona Devine’s investiture at Windsor Castle. Presented by HRH Prince of Wales, my mother received an MBE for outstanding work in Children’s Hospice care. Upon reflection, I want to express the extreme amount of pride and respect I hold ,not just for Fiona’s contributions in paediatric palliative care, but also for her character as a Founder, CEO and Mother. I will forever be in awe of my Mum’s continual dedication and work ethic to Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service, as well as her never ending commitment and love as a Mum. I thank her today, on her special day, for her resolute commitment to providing a service that shelters families and children all over Berkshire in times of hardship. At KKI, we are all encouraged to dedicate at least one day per year volunteering to give back to the communities in which we operate. As such, some of our Marlow-based colleagues, Sonya Flora, Tharindu Silva and Sudeep Gupta, recently spent the day volunteering at the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice. The hospice provides specialist care and support to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families, across Berkshire, UK, and the surrounding counties. Sonya, Tharindu and Sudeep dedicated their time to this important cause by helping to prepare toys which have been donated by the public. They also organised lucky dips, raffle prizes, and hamper bags, which will be sold over the coming months to raise money for the hospice. A heartfelt thank you to our colleagues for their compassion and commitment to making people smile, and to Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Service for allowing KKI to contribute to their mission and witness the incredible work they do. #KKIMakingPeopleSmile
