Ristretto? Espresso? Do you know the difference? If not, read on my friend. Both ristretto and espresso start with the same coffee and machine, but here’s where things get interesting: It’s all about how the coffee is extracted. An espresso is made by forcing hot water through a bed of finely ground coffee at high pressure for around 28 - 30 seconds. What you get is a bold, rich shot with a mixture of sweet and bitter notes. It’s well balanced and packs a punch. Now a ristretto takes it up a notch. Ristretto means ‘restricted’ in Italian and that’s exactly what it is - a shorter, more concentrated version of espresso. It’s brewed with less water and for less time (around 18 - 20 seconds) This makes it smoother, sweeter and typically less better than espresso.
