Originally part of a group of farm buildings near Stoke-on-Trent in the scenic Staffordshire greenbelt, this former dairy barn was in a state of disrepair before its transformation into a stunning single-family home. The design preserves the barn’s rustic charm, featuring two interlocking spaces—a large two-storey volume and a smaller single-storey structure set at a right angle. Key interventions include a striking full-height glazed entrance carved into the primary brick wall, with another large glazed opening at the gable end, framing a dramatic double-height lounge. Bronze-framed crittall doors flood the interior with shared natural light, while the upper floor showcases reclaimed timber beams and contemporary steel elements forming new roof trusses. This floor also houses an open office that overlooks the living space below, offering expansive views through the gable windows. This old barn conversion was part of a collection of farm buildings near Stoke on Trent in the Staffordshire greenbelt and originally housed the dairy. It was in a dilapidated state in need of significant repair as well as conversion to a single family dwelling. The barn, essentially a brick shell with few openings, comprises two elements – a large two storey space connected to a smaller single storey space orientated at 90 degrees. The idea was to maintain as much of the original building and features as possible whilst creating the interventions required to turn it into a functioning contemporary home. Into the barns primary brick wall is cut a full height glazed entrance, terminating above the eaves line. A fully glazed opening is also created in the key gable end wall, behind which a dramatic double height space hosts the lounge. Internal glazed crittall doors in bronze allow shared light to permeate between spaces. On the upper floor, reclaimed timber beams connected with contemporary steel plates form new roof trusses, and an open office space looks down over the double height space and through the gable windows to the views beyond. Albion works is a dramatic mixed housing, office and retail project in a previously neglected area of the city. This is a response to an ambitious programme to build more high-density housing in our city centres. The brief asked for cost-effective contemporary apartments with an innovative and environmentally friendly approach to materials and construction methods, all within a progressive overall planning policy strategy. The pure and dynamic elliptical shape, with its repetitive in-situ cast concrete frame and rhythmically abstract glazed facade, has more affinity with continental housing than the typical British apartment building. The structurally expressive, central-glazed atrium space is designed with consideration of a number of social, circulatory, servicing and bioclimatic factors. The space envelops the single monolith of the glass lift core and dramatic hanging stair with connecting drawbridges. The all-too-common entrance/corridor/single aspect apartment formula is rejected; instead this central space seeks to establish a humane environment, bringing together the building from sky to garden, providing natural ventilation via openable apertures to each apartment and a void for illumination by joyful natural light.
