Navigation day with the Team from Echoes Ecology Ltd These guys get out and about in all sorts places while surveying, so I'm running 2 days with them to make sure they are comfortable navigating around in remote areas. Today was all about getting the basics dialled in. Working on tick lists / route descriptions, using the symbols on the map including the Contours, timings as a backup up and we touched on bearings ahead of their return in a few weeks. We also ran through some emergency procedures & Kit for remote areas to cover all the basics. Corporate Navigation Superb day with the team from Sika Visiting Edinburgh from around the Midlands, they got an introduction to navigation combined with views of Edinburgh... but in true Scottish style, the weather didn't want to play ball, and as we reached the summit of Allermuir, the drizzle and cloud came in. Luckily... its a great excuse to get everyone in an emergency shelter and show them the benefits if something were to happen (Pic 2). Corporate Navigation Great to be out with the team from Renewco Power a couple of weeks ago. The team is with me for a couple of days to learn navigation for their site visits in potentially remote areas. With this in mind, we started from scratch, assuming no knowledge and built in the basics of navigation using map and compass. We worked through map types, symbols on the map, setting the map along with with 'tick features'. This is the bread and butter of summer navigation so practice of this is key. we spent the day focusing on this with other bits added in as the team got confident. We also covered emergency procedures, such as calling Mountain rescue, Emergency kit, phone signal, text 999 & late back procedures to make sure the team has a good idea of what to if the worst case we're to happen in a remote area.
