We’ve been partnering with Chatham House on their five-year XCEPT research programme to transform their analysis into a visual narrative, with interactive maps, charts, and satellite imagery bringing the story into focus. Chatham House’s XCEPT programme considers three case studies looking at transnational conflict across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa, with each producing analysis and recommendations to inform international policy response. Their latest case study explores how migrant smuggling and trafficking networks have evolved and flourished in Libya since the 2011 conflict. Our translation of the extensive research into a compelling piece of data journalism shares the story with a wider audience: https://lnkd.in/dGHSiRxT #DataJournalism #PolicyResearch #Migration #UX #Geopolitics

🎉Celebrating #AW20🎉 This week marks a significant milestone for us … 20 years of Applied Works! Back in 2005, we opened the doors to our London design studio in Hoxton Square that would be home for the next 16 years, before moving to Somerset House in 2020. Over the years, we’ve witnessed and been part of countless awe-inspiring tech milestones that have shaped both the industry and us. From the very beginning, the intersection of data and design—with its potential to create a deeper, shared understanding of the world—has fascinated us. It’s been a joy to meet so many who share our passion, and especially those who’ve joined us in making it a reality. To kick off our double-decade celebrations, we’d like to take a moment to say thank you. Firstly, to our clients; The Times, BBC, Chatham House, UNIDO, International Telecommunication Union, AstraZeneca, EDF, Generation Investment Management, Genesys, Climate Arc, Columbia University, Cisco, LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group), and Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) to name but a few. These partnerships have led to some groundbreaking projects, and we’ve learnt so much from each and every one. Secondly, to our community at Makerversity in Somerset House. Being surrounded by brilliant, creative people working hard to make the world a better place is the perfect environment to keep us on our toes, learning and evolving. And finally, to our dedicated team, past and present, who’ve brought their expertise, bold ideas, humour, thoughtfulness, and fierce ambition to every project. Stay tuned throughout the year for interviews, thoughts, photos, and reflections as we continue to tread this exciting path. And in the meantime, thanks again to everyone for your continued support … we’re just getting started 🚀

Beneath our feet lies a hidden universe that’s essential to life. This month in #RowsandColumns we're featuring #SOIL at Somerset House – an exhibition bringing together artists, scientists, and thinkers to reveal the crucial role and remarkable potential of soil. One work in particular, by Semantic Studios and Juan Cortés, transforms the unseen world of soil into a dynamic, data-driven experience using computational biology and agent-based modeling. Read more about it in this month's #RowsandColumns...

Understanding commuting patterns is crucial for creating sustainable transport. OpenDataCam – an open source tool by Valentin Sawadski – turns video feeds into privacy-friendly urban mobility data. Thanks to the tool, city planners can now use precise, long-term data instead of rough estimates. Read more about it in this month's #RowsandColumns...

Supply chains play a vital role in driving the energy transition, but they’re widely misunderstood. This lack of understanding can hinder the adoption of new technologies, and result in under investment. Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy partnered with us to design and build the Critical Materials Monitor, a platform to address this gap by providing clear and accessible insights into the production, reserves, and trade patterns of the key supply chain components essential for energy transition technologies. Browse the Critical Materials Monitor here: https://lnkd.in/eUEJXW5i

Who will use it? How will they access it? What will they use it for? These are crucial questions every organisation must address before creating a data tool or product. Answering them requires more than anecdotal evidence from your team or feedback from loyal clients. You need to ask the right questions – and ask the right people. This month, we’re hosting an interactive half-day workshop at Somerset House. Our expert trainers will cover the key principles of UX, why it matters, and how to conduct effective user interviews. You’ll learn to create user personas that reflect real needs, motivations, and pain points, and gain hands-on experience in leading user needs workshops within your organisation.

Our final #RowsandColumns before Christmas celebrates the incredible talent at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London graduate show. The MA Design for Data Visualisation projects left an impression on us, with one standout being Noise Factory by Hangjie Cai, a multimedia designer shedding light on how noise pollution disproportionately impacts disadvantaged communities. Projects like Cai's showcase the power of data communication to drive real-world change – an inspiring note to end 2024 on. Merry Christmas! 🎄
