The UK’s statutory regulator for architects. We keep an online public register of 42,000+ architects.
About us
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) is the UK’s independent, statutory regulator of architects. We work in the public interest to protect those who use or may use architects’ services and support architects through regulation. We keep a public register of 42,000+ architects which you can search online - architects-register.org.uk. Only those on this Register can legally call themselves an architect in the UK. We set the qualifications and experience required to be an architect, as well as standards of conduct and practice. We can investigate complaints about the conduct or practice of architects, and about someone calling themselves an architect illegally. We are also the UK’s Competent Authority for architects.

On Friday ARB visited Birmingham City University to speak to students about our work and the role we play in maintaining standards within the architects profession. Visits such as these give us the opportunity to provide insights into our regulatory responsibilities first-hand, and to respond to questions from those seeking to go on and join the Register of Architects directly. With International Women's Day falling on a Saturday this year, we are choosing to mark the occasion today. There are now 13,394 women on the Register, accounting for 31.9% of all architects—a figure that continues to rise. While we’re proud of this progress, we recognise that it still falls short of reflecting the demographics of the UK. At ARB, we remain committed to shaping a profession that is fully representative of the society we serve. Learn more about the Register’s composition➡️https://lnkd.in/eBEqgcr

This week ARB sent a delegation to New York with the Department for Business and Trade. We discussed ARB’s routes to UK registration for internationally-qualified architects – in particular, the Mutual Recognition Agreement we signed with our counterparts in the US National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), and explored further opportunities for improving routes into the profession. We had useful meetings with the New York State Boards for Architecture and Landscape Architecture, RIBA, Bespoke Careers, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Foster + Partners. We also hosted a Reception at the British Consulate residence that brought leaders together from the architecture sector and wider business to explore how the mutual recognition of qualified architects between the US and UK has created new opportunities for trans-Atlantic cooperation, professional mobility, and trade. Thank you to everyone who met with us, including Alan Gogbashian, Deputy Trade Commissioner for North America – British Consulate in New York and Michael Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) A huge thank you to Abraham Thomas, Daniel Brodsky Curator, Modern Architecture, Design and Decorative Arts, for leading a fascinating private tour of the exhibition Materialized Space: The Architecture of Paul Rudolph at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Architects Registration Board reposted this
I was delighted to welcome the leaders of Architects Registration Board, Hugh Simpson and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), Michael Armstrong, to New York to discuss the opportunities created by the UK-US Architecture MRA and to explore how we can make transatlantic ties in the architecture sector even stronger. It was a brilliant evening celebrating UK-US cooperation. Huge thanks to our partners and the #architecture capital of the US! UK Business and Trade - North America

ARB’s research into culture and misconduct found that misconduct is felt to be rooted in a chain of structural and cultural factors, which includes cyclical poor treatment. Architects told us about some of the ways they are seeking to break the cycle. Firms with positive cultures can take steps to re-educate younger employees. Firms can teach new skills and discourage the culture of carrying overwork into employment, with impetus coming from the top. ARB’s research into culture and misconduct found that misconduct is felt to be rooted in a chain of structural and cultural factors, which includes a lack of representation for underrepresented groups. Architects shared with us some of the ways in which they are seeking to improve representation in the profession. Firms with more diverse workforces can encourage individuals from underrepresented groups who might be considering leaving the profession to remain. This in turn helps to facilitate change in the profession. Architects told us about some of the successes that have been made here – but also the need for more to be done.
