Doctors in the UK have voiced concern over a growing trend in silicosis cases in people who work with engineered stone. This increase in cases has been seen in workers who cut, sand, or otherwise disrupt kitchen worktop surfaces made with artificial stone, which can contain varying amounts of silica. Often dubbed ‘the new asbestos’, silica dust can cause a range of incurable, long-latency respiratory problems, such as silicosis and lung cancer. Silica dust has been a growing concern in global health and safety industries. Australia banned the use of artificial stone at the beginning of this year, with advocates calling for the UK to follow suit. At Arco, we have previously called for increased resources for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), to support its capacity to enforce regulations and help reduce incidents of ill health and deaths. We urge employers to assess the level of silica dust their employees are exposed to and take appropriate measures to reduce the risk, following HSE guidance and industry experts' advice. In short, the general hierarchy of control applies to how you protect employees from the dangers of silica dust. Eliminate – Completely remove all material that contains silica from the workplace. Substitute – Replace the materials with silica-free alternatives or use procedures that do not disrupt the material. Engineering controls – Use barriers to create separation between workers and artificial stone, or remove the hazard through a local exhaust ventilation system or water suppression unit. Administrative controls – Educate employees to change the way they work, remove them from dusty areas and schedule work at different times of the day. PPE – Where working in proximity to silica dust is unavoidable, employers must provide adequate protective equipment, such as respirators, breathing apparatus and dust masks. At Arco, we believe there is no safe level of exposure to harmful dust particles. The only safe exposure limit is zero. However, we know this is not always achievable, so raising awareness of the issues of silica exposure is our moral duty. For more information and resources, visit https://loom.ly/Qf7-uQU
