Great book recommendation for those in the hospitality industry: Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. https://lnkd.in/ekpTnEvk You can read a full review here: Will Guidara is the epitome of going above and beyond in service. This book tells the story of the rise of the fine dining restaurant Eleven Madison Park in New York from being number 50 in the world's best restaurant list to number 1 in 2017. It didn't get this accolade just by serving incredible food but also by providing the most amazing hospitality and experience to its guests and Will Guidara was the co-owner and general manager who oversaw this elevation. Starting with a culture of acquiring and nurturing a great team, Guidara puts his staff as his top priority. He stresses the importance of collaboration and says that by giving staff autonomy and ownership of certain aspects they feel empowered and invested in the business. I love the fact that the budget is subject to the 95/5% rule: 95% of their expenditure is sensible and cautious and the other 5% is frivolous and luxurious, with money lavished on extravagant staff parties and treats. As a person Guidara seems completely driven and focussed and he knew from an early age that he wanted to be in hospitality. He didn't always go for the easy and obvious career choices and instead made decisions with a long term goal in mind. However, the chapters that blew my mind were the examples of amazing hospitality that were introduced at the restaurant, not necessarily expensive but thoughtful and ingenious that would leave the recipients with an experience and story that they would be recounting for years: greeting people by name as they arrived (having researched what they looked like), dashing out to buy, then serving exquisitely, hot dogs for a group of overseas business men who were overheard to say that they regretted not having time to sample street food since they'd been in New York. Some of the changes made in the restaurant that the diners wouldn't notice but that made the whole experience better for everyone were impactful, like introducing traffic directions for servers so they didn't collide and using hand signals so drinks servers knew which type of water to bring without guests having to wait. Guidara also says that when you are engaging with a customer it shouldn't feel transactional, it should feel like a relational exchange which reminded me of a lot that I just read in Super Communicators by Charles Duhigg. Even though this book is mainly about the hospitality industry, the same message message of great leadership, intricate attention to detail and leaving customers with a warm glow of joy can be applied to any business.
Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More Than They Expect a book by Will Guidara.

Had a wonderful stay at The Bedford Hotel in Russell Square. Thanks so much Imperial London Hotels and Adem Duran. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were spotless, spacious and comfortable. A very tasty breakfast too!
