The 5 attributes of high performing BAs During September, I had the privilege of assessing candidates for 2024 Business Analyst Of The Year with Philippa Thomas and Evelyn Rutledge. From a record number of applications, eight exceptional candidates were shortlisted ; George Briley Mark Cross MBA MCIIS CBAP CISSP Sinead Torley Suzanne Lynn Renwick, PhD Lalita Lalwani Jonathan Watkins Rachel Drinkwater Kay Hardy As we evaluated the candidates, I sought to uncover the essence, the “secret sauce,” that set them apart: 1. Motivated to make an impact. These BAs exhibit a strong drive and energy to continually advance themselves, their organizations, and the BA profession. They have a clear understanding of their organizations’ goals, metrics, and customer needs. They dedicate time to building capabilities within their organizations through mentoring and supporting internal communities whilst contributing to the broader industry through IIBA chapters, podcasts, blogs, BA manager forums, mentoring, Young BAs, speaking at conferences, writing books, and influencing industry qualifications with BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT . 2. Growth Mindset A Growth mindset was plain to see, which included advancing to higher levels of BA qualifications, learning new technologies, attending events, and taking on different roles or areas within the organization. Each candidate exhibited a curiosity for their work, exploring new products or identifying new area for BA knowledge such as cyber security and AI. 3. Acting as the glue. These BAs often served as the glue possessing the ability to “hover” above to observe overall behaviour, and then descend to ground level to take action. They managed and influenced stakeholders and introducing new perspectives from previously unheard groups. They connected siloed groups and influenced sponsors, while identifying new opportunities such as forging links with academic institutions. 4. Use the tools The judicious use of tools was evident, with selections made for the right situations and showing results. There was encouraging evidence of BAs bringing playfulness into the workplace by using unconventional tools such as improvisation and gamification. This led to some BAs being sought after to run ideation workshops. Generative AI tools were primarily used for synthesizing information collected to improve the speed and quality of presenting insights. While AI is still emerging, the curiosity and desire to experiment and form AI working groups were evident. 5. Flexibility - the Swiss Army Knife Many BAs viewed their role more as a versatile skill set rather than a position with strict boundaries, often stepping beyond their defined roles to achieve success. Some delved deeply into technical details to extract actionable data, conducted training sessions, or led project management. They identified areas where they could add value and specialise such as data analytics. #BAOTY #BA2024 IRM UK AssistKD

Well done to EVERYONE involved in #BA2024. 👏👏👏 What a fantastic conference, and what a brilliant community. Here are the AssistKD team’s Top 10 Takeaways. 👇Feel free to add your own: 🌟 IRM UK organised a brilliant and seamless few days of networking, workshops and talks... with delicious food and great amenities at the fabulous Convene venue in Houndsditch.      🌟Women’s Rugby star Maggie Alphonsi MBE is funny, warm and inspirational. She challenged BAs to be comfortable with being uncomfortable saying, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you…” 🌟 Business Consultant Fabricio Laguna, investigative journalist Geoff White and world-renowned musician and BBC TV broadcaster LJ Rich got everybody talking with their keynotes, with a focus on AI and cybersecurity.   🌟 Receiving her BA of the Year 2024 Award, the wonderful Kay Hardy took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on Young Business Analysts (YBA), her fellow founders and YBA's many helpers and volunteers.   🌟 We learned that BAs are extremely good at checking for accuracy...especially those who hadn’t forgotten their specs! Thank you to everyone who took part in our tricky “Is it AI or is it real?” photo competition. 🌟 There was great weather and a great turnout for Mike Williams’s ‘Chatty Walk’. Thanks to Jonathan Hunsley, Fae Marcano, Kay Hardy, Geertje Appel, Danny Kalkhoven and Naomi Chouinard for making it possible and great fun. The 'Chatty Run’ started at 7am... so a round of applause to those who made it, especially the morning after the BA Party. 🌟 Philippa Thomas led a completely booked out (in fact over-subscribed) Chair Yoga session provoking calls for it to be repeated next year.     🌟 The business case for apprenticeships really does stack up – from financial benefits to energising BA teams and offering opportunities to new starters and existing employees. Many AssistKD former apprentices were at #BA2024 and living their best BA lives. 🌟 A panel discussion on Job Crafting moderated by Craig Rollason challenged BAs to use their analytical skills on themselves and look at how they can do more of what they love – with wisdom from Kristy Dean, Bryony Rochester, Iurii Gomon and Graham Newton. 🌟 The stand-out karaoke performance at the BA Party was Orla Desmond with her note perfect and sublime rendition of ‘Black Velvet’. 🎤👏👏👏 We will gloss over the AssistKD team’s attempt at YMCA…what happens at the BA Party stays at the BA Party!    #BA2024 #businessanalysis #businessanalyst #businessconference  IRM UK BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT IIBA UK Shane McGlynn Anna Slater

The Department for Education's list of the UK's Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers 2024 is out! (The link is in the comments👇). Well done to all those responsible for these successful apprenticeship schemes. 👏👏👏 If you are considering running a #BusinessAnalyst or #ServiceDesigner Apprenticeship scheme, here are 12 top tips for success… ✅ You complete your research on the Business Analyst or Service Designer apprenticeship programme.  ✅ You establish that you can provide coverage of the relevant Apprenticeship Standard, the professional and personal skills required to be demonstrated by the Apprentice.  ✅ Your organisation recognises and treats apprentices as learners (of all ages) and as an investment for the future.  ✅ You secure senior stakeholder support for running a programme.  ✅ You successfully compete for funding from your levy account.  ✅ You cast your net wide and consider internal and external applicants for your roles.  ✅ You hire the right apprentices – focusing on attitudes and behaviours including a keen interest in learning, a positive mindset and being comfortable asking questions.  ✅ You educate colleagues on the investment you are making for the stars of the future.  ✅ You analyse your pipeline of work and allocate apprentice time to gain exposure to the required skills.   ✅ You set aside 20% of an apprentices time for formal learning. This is a mandatory requirement.   ✅ You ensure ongoing support is in place, with a suitable internal mentor (or mentors) available.  ✅ You set clear career objectives, establish that further opportunity is available and increased pay to aim towards. AssistKD launched the Business Analyst Apprenticeship scheme in 2017 and the Service Designer Apprenticeship scheme in 2024. Both schemes offer training from experts in their fields, an Ofsted outstanding apprenticeship team, dedicated mentors to support each apprentice throughout their programme.  Visit the apprenticeships section of our website to find out more.  #apprenticeships #apprenticeshipemployers #BAapprenticeships #servicedesigner
