The penultimate member of the stellar line up for the annual conference this year is Jasper Meade from PYC Group. Jasper's breakout session will be an introduction to natural fibre insulations and their use in new build timber frame and retrofit projects to the highest standards including Passive House and Enerfit. He will look at classifications of insulation products, physical forms and performance benefits as well as fitting into timber frames and roofing and fitting to retrofit projects for IWI and EWI. Jasper will also talk on the circular economy – carbon impacts and re-use/re-purpose and offer attendees a chance to ask questions. (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building
Architecture and Planning
The AECB is committed to accelerating the UK construction industry's delivery of Net Zero carbon by 2050.
About us
The Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) is the UK’s longest established not-for-profit independent network of sustainable building professionals, tradespeople and self-builders. Founded in 1989, membership includes local authorities, housing associations, builders, architects, designers, consultants, manufacturers and self-builders. AECB champions the acceleration of the UK towards Net Zero carbon by 2050. The climate emergency is being caused by greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. We emit huge amounts of carbon dioxide by lighting, appliances, space and water heating in our homes. Of all the emissions that come from UK buildings, 69% come from the domestic stock which is responsible for 18% of our annual national emissions. 80% of the domestic stock that will exist in 2050 already exists today. At COP26 the AECB supported the signing of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)’s High-Performance Buildings Initiative. This sets up a global network of 26 international Centres of Excellence of High-Performance Buildings to provide education, training, and resources supporting local industry in the rapid development of buildings consistent with the UN Framework for energy efficiency standards in buildings. AECB specialises in: • Running advanced online retrofit training: The e-learning CarbonLite™ Retrofit course. • Collaborating with academic institutions: The CPD Cert. Building Energy Using PHPP with TU Dublin course. • Generating guidance and standards for professionals and self-builders Including the AECB Retrofit Standard being adopted by a UK building society. • Sales of advanced PPPH software for architects and designers. • Advising government including supporting the UK Heat and building strategy (October 2021) that is: ‘putting consumers at the heart of our action to transform our buildings.”

Don't just take our word for it...
Yes, you guessed it - not one, but two more well respected industry professionals hosting a workshop breakout session at the AECB Annual Conference this year. Hannah Dixon and Dr Sarah Price will be looking at what it means to work as an AECB or Passivhaus professional. In an interactive session, they will explore the services provided by AECB Certifiers and what we love about them. They will finish with some AECB case studies so you can get a sense of some real life projects! Not to me missed... Be sure to catch our Technical Innovations Manager Richard Hawkins at the (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building Conference 2024 in Swindon. Richard will be discussing sustainable materials in retrofit along side Woodknowledge Wales' Dr Diana Waldron. #AECBConference #Swindon #Retrofit #sustainablematerials
What's this? More fascinating and engaging speakers on the line up for the afternoon breakout sessions! Dr Diana Waldron from Woodknowledge Wales and Richard Hawkins from SO Modular Ltd will present from both perspectives, and will focus mainly on Retrofit case studies. The session will include a Q&A Session for delegates incorporating an interactive online tool to pose various questions to the audience, related to barriers to the adoption of natural materials, experience on cost, government support for retrofit, etc. and give an opportunity for delegates to contribute to the discussion. There will be a range of interactive materials included in this interactive networking space, where people can approach more informally and discuss any topics, or ask further questions more directly. This includes: Wall build-ups with natural materials (Sheep wool, wood fibre, cellulose, etc) as well as guidance and publications. This session also enables attendees to claim 1 CPD point accredited by The CPD Group. The conference has 10 CPD points and 8 Passive House Institute points Don't miss out! I'm really happy to share that I am now a certified Retrofit Coordinator. Thank you to Harshad Patel at Synergy Training Centre for supporting me in attaining the ABBE Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Assessment. This course follows on and consolidates the knowledge received through the excellent (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building CarbonLite Retrofit Coordination Course. A primary element of the submission was a case study, which I based on a phased retrofit of a 1939, hollow-block Chalet Bungalow in Cornwall. The first phase of the work included the creation of a large South facing window in place of a draughty chimney breast and the thermal upgrade to the fabric of the two front rooms of the house. The installation was designed in layers so that it can be adapted in the future as services change. Mike Wye Ltd and Chris at Back to Earth helped us develop a solid timber floating floor using natural materials that met building regulations. The walls were insulated internally using Thermafleece sheep's wool insulation and Cornish Lime's Cornerstone Insulating Render was used to address the condensation in the bathroom. Thank you also goes to Ecological Building Systems and Earthwise Construction for their advice on ventilation and airtightness and to Chris Worboys of Zenergy who worked with us on an initial PHPP model for the design, which helped direct our approach to the linear thermal bridge caused by the distinctive balcony. The building work was carried out by Tim Pickard and his attention to detail, care in installing the airtight layer and proactive approach to the challenges of the design, has made for a well built and very comfortable retrofitted home.
