The representative body for professionally qualified Mountaineering and Climbing instructors in the UK and Ireland
About us
The Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) is the representative body for professionally qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors in the UK and Ireland. AMI was formed in 1990 to represent the interests of the highly experienced mountaineers who have undergone rigorous training and assessment to qualify under the Mountain Training UK (MTUK) Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Scheme. All full members of the Association are qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors or Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors. Trainee membership is open to those who have completed a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor training course. In this way we aim to help and assist those instructors who are at the beginning of their outdoor career by offering support, workshops and access to the AMI civil liability insurance scheme. AMI is committed to ensuring the continuing high standards of climbing and mountaineering instruction in the future.

A great read from Daniel. What will next year bring?
Like many of you, I saw the powerful video that Norwich City Football Club produced for World Mental Health Day. Such a moving video, if you've not seen it I would certainly recommend doing so. It was fitting that on #WorldMentalHeath day, Tuesday 10th October, that I was fortunate enough to spend the day with our clients ASSOCIATION OF MOUNTAINEERING INSTRUCTORS, British Association of International Mountain Leaders & Mountain Training. I personally struggle with heights & the thought of abseiling off a bridge was extremely daunting. However, our leader for the day David, encouraged us all to speak about our concerns with no pressure, rather than bottle them up. Talking did relieve some of my stresses, and whilst it may seem a relatively simple task, it really resonated with me the importance and power of talking to one another. It is truly a privilege spending time with clients in their field and allows us to understand the technical aspects of the work they do. Next year, perhaps we can abseil down the Castlemead office !

We had a great couple of days at Association of British Climbing Walls conference, our stall was supported by Rab and DMM who dressed out mannequin for a day out in the mountains! We where there to support our members, many of whom work in a technical advisor capacity at climbing walls, while discussing amongst other topics the challenges climbing walls face in transitioning climbers from indoors, to the outdoor aspect of climbing. There where some inspiring talks on a range of topics related to safety, growth, and new technology’s that connect with the indoor climbing world, and there was an exciting array of new products from manufacturers. We will next be at Kendal Mountain Events Festival. See you there!
