  • THE ATCM CITIES CONFERENCE City Centre Management in the 21st Century Manchester, 8th October 2024 If the UK and Ireland are to grow and thrive, then cities will be key drivers of progress. But cities will also be the places where challenges around the climate emergency, changing populations, social tensions and new technology will play out first and most dangerously. With this in mind, ATCM is delighted to be working with CityCo & Manchester City Centre BID to deliver the Cities Conference where we can bring together big city BIDs, city centre managers, stakeholders and friends to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing cities in 2024 and beyond. Book your seat today to join us for great networking opportunities and an exciting agenda. This event is free of charge. https://lnkd.in/eetRW8Ft

  • MEASURING THE SUCCESS OF 15-MINUTE CITIES At Day Two of Summer School 2024 (Innovation in Town and City Climate Action) At Day One of Summer School, Carlos Moreno will outline his vision of the 15 Minute City. On Day Two, we will take the opportunity to explore the concept from different dimensions. 'Measuring the Success of 15-Minute Cities' will explore how Beauclair Ltd’s data could measure retail spend within 15 minute towns and cities, and within “connected or living neighbourhoods” to empirically evaluate success, which types of retail are changing / benefiting e.g. Food and Drink vs Grocery, demonstrate WHERE customers are coming from (e.g. within the 15 minute area or beyond), and WHO THEY ARE terms of age, affluence etc.) It will also share a case study of the IMPACT OF PEDESTRIANISATION on retail spend, and ask whether sales increased or decreased overall, looking at which days/retail sectors/customer types were impacted the most. Finally, it will open up to a discussion on the economic merits or flaws in the 15-Minute City concept in different destinations. This discussion will be led by Beauclair Ltd and facilitated by the Chair of the ATCM Advisory Council, Stefan Gurney SFIPM. More information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dsZgqHYN

  • GLASGOW’S JOURNEY TO NET ZERO Cllr Susan Aitken is arguably one of the UK's biggest climate leaders in local government. Declaring a climate emergency as early as 2019, Glasgow, under her stewardship, has always been ahead of the game. Its ambitions extend to one of the first, if not the first, Net Zero UK city. It is home to Scotland’s first low emissions zone and one of the UK’s largest onshore windfarms. And in 2021, it cemented its legacy as a climate leader when it hosted COP26, leading to the ground-breaking Glasgow Climate Pact to make legally binding a transition away from fossil fuels. At Summer School 2024 ‘Innovation for Town and City Climate Action’ delegates will get to hear from the person driving this action. ATCM is delighted to confirm that the Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Susan Aitken, will join as a keynote speaker at Summer School to talk about Glasgow’s journey to Net Zero on Day One of the conference (19th June). Join us for a debate about the challenges behind creating a sustainable city. More information is available at: https://lnkd.in/dsZgqHYN. • TOGETHER TO ZERO For Summer School 2024, ATCM is teaming up with a partner who can offer something a little bit different. One who can transform how we use energy, resulting in a significant drop in consumption, reducing carbon emissions and saving money. We are delighted to welcome Hemiko as headline sponsors of 'Innovation in Town and City Climate Action'. Hemiko specialises in developing heat networks. Heat networks, also known as district heating, work by collecting local unused heat, turning it into hot water and distributing that hot water to local users via a network of underground pipes. With Hemiko's support, businesses who are clustered together in locations like town centres can share excess heat, reducing demand for energy and saving money. It’s a solution which makes both economic and environmental sense. Join us at Summer School 2024 (Glasgow, 19th and 20th June) to meet our friends at Hemiko and learn how heat networks can revolutionise town centre energy consumption. • NET ZERO X RESILIENCE WHAT A CLIMATE READY TOWN LOOKS LIKE! (AT SUMMER SCHOOL 2024) WHEN: 19th - 20th June 2024 WHERE: Glasgow COST: Tickets for as little as £185 (+VAT) with the ‘ALL IN’ special offer. We are under extreme pressure. Frequent storms in the past few months have wrecked havoc across the UK and Ireland. In the 18 months to the beginning of April 2024, England has been subjected to record rainfall. It's led to important discussions around how towns and cities adapt to new weather patterns. There are serious question marks over whether London needs to become a 'sponge city' to overcome the challenges (see: https://lnkd.in/euVV5dwJ). There are two important questions. Firstly, how do we slow the current rate of climate change through the way we design towns? And secondly, how do we adapt towns to be resilient to the change that has already taken place to protect communities and businesses from disruption? At Summer School 2024, ‘Innovation in Town and City Climate Action’ we will explore both. Global engineering heavyweights, Mott MacDonald, will join us for a double header on net zero and resilience as we explore ‘What a Climate Ready Town Looks Like’. Alan Hendry, Mott MacDonald Sustainability Director and Fiona Barbour, Business Development Manager for Scotland and Ireland, will provide critical insight into the challenges.
