In Augusts edition of the International Fire Professional, the journal of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE), Astute Fires technical lead Jim McGonigal met as out-going Branch President to discuss current challenges across the region.
About us

We are happy to announce plans to open a new office in Edinburgh in the coming months, marking our expansion to Scotland’s east coast—where Astute Fire first began back in 2010. As we prepare for this exciting next chapter, we are eager to hear from fire engineers of all levels who may be open to exploring new career opportunities. Additionally, we’re on the lookout for senior roles and an office lead to help shape and drive our Edinburgh team. https://lnkd.in/eDTCS6hR Stay tuned for more updates!

We were delighted to host Rutland Door Controls and esteemed guests yesterday in the United Kingdom Testing and Certification's Learning Academy. Engaging with architects, specifiers, and passive fire protection specialists on the critical importance of fire safety and life-saving technologies, sharing knowledge, and driving forward the conversation on enhancing safety standards is always incredibly insightful. UKTC’s Daniel Fitzsimmons remarked, "It is great that so many people are taking the importance of fire safety seriously, seeking opportunities to educate themselves on testing standards, and sharing best practices with other professionals within the fire protection field. Many of today's guests had never witnessed a fire test in person before. This training day gave them a unique opportunity to see first hand the effects of poorly specified and installed specimens next to correctly installed ones, emphasising how small errors can have massive consequences to life safety." If you are an architect, specifier, or member of a passive fire protection body and would like more information on utilising the United Kingdom Testing and Certification Learning Academy, with access to witness a fire test first hand, please enquire at info@uktestcert.com.

Astute Fire were pleased to take 6 staff along to the Live Fire Test / CPD event hosted at the United Kingdom Testing and Certification facility in East Kilbride by Rutland Door Controls. It is a fantastic facility, and the presentations were very interesting. Viewing live fire tests and discussing the outcomes is an extremely useful way to reinforce the importance of correct specification and why installation in line with a manufacturers approved details on site is so important to the overall fire safety of buildings. Note: The fire test had intentional, yet minor defects to the installations to show the significance that they can have on the performance of fire doors (including a small section of beading to the glazing being removed).

This was a really interesting project to be involved in for the fit-out for OVO having produced the original base build fire strategy for the building. Well done to MLA and the wider design team.
Sustainable energy provider OVO Energy's new home is appropriately situated across four floors of Glasgow’s first ‘Net Zero Carbon’ powered building Cadworks Glasgow OVO Energy required a best-in-class sustainable workplace which would redefine their approach to ‘the office’ and provide a destination to bring their Scottish based teams together. The design of the link stairs between each of the four floors was therefore fundamental to the success of the office move and an opportunity to create something special. MLA developed proposals to create ‘slices’ between the upper floors creating dramatic thresholds to ascend or descend. More importantly, it provided unique and interesting spaces around each stair. Watch the video below to see the evolution of the design. Hats off to the project technical team who made these links possible – Linear Design & Construct Woolgar Hunter Engineers Astute Fire Parkhead Welding British Gypsum and JCarey Design …and not forgetting the wider Project Team - CuthbertWhite Thomas & Adamson Wallace Whittle Source 📸 David Cadzow #officedesign #commercialproperty #architectureandesign
