Last summer, we unveiled 'I Am Because We Are' by Nicola Green at Rhodes House, a vibrant textile celebration of 120 years of Rhodes Scholarship history! Each of its ten artworks highlights the lives, heritage, and achievements of ten Scholars and Fellows from the Rhodes community. Today, let's zoom in on one of these stories.   Meet Mandela Rhodes Scholar Esethu Cenga. Established with Nelson Mandela in 2003, The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is our longest-standing partnership. It provides scholarships and leadership opportunities to African students undertaking postgraduate study in South African universities.   Esethu is a trailblazer in sustainable fashion. 'I Am Because We Are' features a vibrant patchwork vinyl pattern crafted from fabric scraps and second-hand clothes, championing Esethu's mission as the co-founder and CEO of Rewoven Co. Through Rewoven, she strives to create a circular economy in South Africa's clothing and textiles industry by transform textile waste into new fabrics. The framed white fabric within the artwork showcases some of Rewoven's upcycled fabric.   Esethu's dedication earned her MRF's inaugural Äänit Prize for social impact in 2021. With further initiatives like Future of Fashion, Esethu is at the forefront of reshaping the fashion industry into one that's more inclusive, ethical, and future-fit. #Art #TextileArt #ArtExhibition #Community #Storytelling #SustainableFashion #CircularEconomy

In the depths of winter, we came together to celebrate the launch of Valéria Nascimento’s Floating Garden, and dream of spring! A permanent installation, this work comprises 10,000 handmade pieces of porcelain. It represents the diversity of the Rhodes Scholar community through geographic regions and their national flowers. Made in collaboration with Neil Wigfield, our Head Gardener of the Rhodes Trust, regions covered through the installation include: Australia – Golden Wattle; British Virgin Islands – Yellow Cedar; Canada – Acer Maple; China – Plum Blossom; Germany – Cornflower; Grenada – Bougainvillea; Guinea – Vernonia Djalonensis; Hong Kong – Bauhinia; India – Lotus; Jamaica -Lignum Vitae; Malawi – Lotus; Malaysia – Hibiscus; New Zealand – Kowhai; South Sudan – Hibiscus; St Kitt and Nevis – Flamboyant Tree; Togo – Burnet Rose Trinidad & Tobago – Chaconia; USA – Rose. ✨ A is for Authenticity 💫 “The authenticity of a thing is the essence of all that is transmissible from its beginning, ranging from its substantive duration to its testimony to the history which it has experienced.” So writes Walter Benjamin in his 1936 essay, ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’. Unless you are a collector of contemporary art buying work directly from an artist, the question of #authenticity and whether the work you have set your heart on is what it purports to be, has to be a question to consider, even if only momentarily. How you work out the authenticity of a work of art very much depends on what you are buying and where from. As my #expertise is in Modern British Art, I will be examining the concept of authenticity through that lens.
