Our global community of #AtlanticFellows addresses the root causes of inequity and works collectively for long-term solutions. This week, in the context of the International Day of Charity, three Fellows offered different perspectives on philanthropy. Here, Renata Cuk gives her view on what is needed to drive transformative change.

The global Atlantic Fellows community is united in its mission to tackle inequities such as poverty. This year's theme for the International Day of Charity is "Global Solidarity to Eradicate Poverty." Even in Australia, a country regarded as relatively wealthy, poverty is deeply rooted in the history of land ownership and wealth accumulation. Read this article by Michelle Steele on what philanthropy can do to bring new approaches for change. #AtlanticFellows #GlobalSolidarity #Philanthropy https://lnkd.in/ePhBaWn7

"The power of the Walking the Talk for Dementia event does not lie in any one participant, or in titles and degrees, but in the strength of the collective leadership: a fundamental and collaborative principle that values diversity and equity in decision-making and the distribution of basic rights. We are more than individuals; we are a community grounded in trust, respect, and the championing of vulnerability for greater change!" Fernando Peres, Atlantic Fellow and co-founder of Walking the Talk for Dementia, reflects on the event's successful conclusion over the weekend in Santiago de Compostela. The journey, which ended with a symposium, brought together those living with dementia, their carers and professionals in the field to share experiences and break down the stigma surrounding the disease. #DementiaCare #BrainHealth #GBHI #AtlanticFellows

Atlantic Institute’s Kim Lian Ooi shares her reflections from Day 4 of Walking the Talk for Dementia 2024. "Aug. 29 marked the final day of the Atlantic Institute-funded Walking the Talk for Dementia 2024 along the Camino in Spain, where those living with dementia, their caregivers, friends and researchers spent an immersive week learning best practices from each other and, more importantly, showing that a diagnosis of dementia does not change who you are as a person. We started from Lavacolla to end the week’s walk in the city of Santiago de Compostela. The day was cloudy, and we began by walking up the hill, eventually merging with locals from the Adagea Alzheimer's Association and their families who walked with us to the finish line. The local press was also there to cover the event. Young and old, able-bodied or not, we all walked together in the same direction toward the same destination. It was moving to see so many people gather in support of this final stage of the four-day walk. Local police were on hand to manage traffic so that we could safely cross roads while passing cars and lorries sounded their horns in support. As a group of more than 100 people, we made quite an entrance to Santiago de Compostela, where we headed toward the city center to complete the walk at Praza do Obradoiro, the main square. At this point, most of the group became rather emotional; a street bagpiper played a tune as though he, too, was accompanying the group on its final, heroic steps toward the finish line. There were cheers, joy, laughter, and tears of happiness and gratitude as so many living with dementia completed this journey with their families, friends, and the new friends they made while walking, including neurologists and practitioners representing multiple organizations around the world, all supporting brain health. This weekend, a symposium is taking place in the city so that everyone who participated in the Walk might discover what they learned from each other and how they might put their shared experiences into practice to better support people living with dementia everywhere." #DementiaCare #BrainHealth #GBHI #AtlanticFellows
