An amazing blog by our very own Charlie Hart and it got me thinking about my own experience of bullying, going way back when, at school. I remember year 7 being a horrendous time. My parents sent me to a school where I would have to travel 2 hours each way on a bus for an opportunity to get a better education. It had a grammar stream; however, was the other side of neighbouring borough and was filled with kids who would be dropped off in 4x4's. This was in 2002. I was bullied every day on the way to school and on the way home by a year 9 student. He would terrorise me on the bus to the point where the full top deck would be joining in, and it escalated to one day where he stole my phone from me and started shouting abuse at my mum on the other end. Then I'd get home and have to deal with my stepdad. Just before I left this school, my shoes were stolen during lunch and chucked over the fence. Everyone laughed and they were shouting "your mum won't be able to afford another pair. Go get em, Alan." The school's advice was that I should start late and finish early, to avoid the bully. My education had to be affected, which is quite a common occurrence. Mum refused and pulled me out of the school. I was left without any education for a further 6 months until I was finally enrolled into the school on my estate.   It toughened me up and shaped who I am today; however, it shouldn't have been that way. School was supposed to be my safe haven. It became that once I joined Abbey Wood, but during that period of bullying, it was a shared hell. We need to do more to ensure our children feel safe! #AntiBullyingWeek

As we enter Trans Awareness Week, I’m reflecting on a powerful idea from Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny. Do not obey in advance. Originally a warning against creeping authoritarianism, resisting the urge to soften or silence ourselves in anticipation of potential backlash, feels relevant in an increasingly polar political climate. For trans people and allies, it means refusing to make ourselves small, stay silent, or preemptively conform to avoid being seen as “too much” or “too political.” Certain topics are frequently framed as not appropriate for the workplace, but I think expecting people to self-edit to suit respectability politics is the problem. Society rewards those who fit neatly into “approved” boxes – but the cost is losing parts of ourselves. Trans Awareness Week for me is a chance to remind myself that being true to who I am isn’t only personal; it’s an act of courage. When we stop obeying in advance, we push back against the subtle demands for erasure, reinforcing our right to exist. For allies, the call is similar: don’t sit on the sidelines or give in to the pressures to keep trans lives out of “polite conversation.” Speak up. Support loudly. Show up visibly. The subtle steps of conformity are what pave the way for the erosion of rights and protections, normalising bigotry disguised as “politeness.” To be clear, choosing visibility isn’t easy; it’s choice in a world that often doesn’t offer us the courtesy of acceptance. But this week, I invite each of you to reframe how you approach Trans Awareness Week by refusing to obey in advance. Whether through conversation, policy, advocacy, or being who you are, every act builds a world where no one has to wonder if they’re “too much” simply for existing.

What an outstanding event we enjoyed yesterday at ProudHR! 🌈 A heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for an unforgettable evening with our inspiring speaker, Charlie Hart, who guided us through the journey of Intersecting Identities. We shared laughter, shed a few tears, and had countless questions about neurodiversity and queer identity, exploring how these intersect and evolve throughout our lives. Thank you, Charlie, for leading us on this journey—we've all gained invaluable insights. We were delighted to welcome over 60 attendees, including ProudHR friends, family, and some new faces, all enjoying quality time networking and getting to know each other. None of this would have been possible without our generous hosts, WHSmith, who provided their stunning office space with an impressive view and fabulous refreshments from their new Smith's Family Kitchen collection. Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and to those who supported us from afar. _______ ♻️ Repost to inspire others and spread the word about ProudHR ➕ Follow Charlie for more insights on neurodiversity and LGBTQIA+ inclusion _______ #ProudHR #Neurodiversity #LGBTQIA #CommunityEvent #WHSmith #InclusiveWorkplaces #NetworkingEvent
