Head of Strategy and Programmes at Bankers for Net Zero | edie 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders

A treat to join this fantastic event hosted by FinTech-Tables and Barclays in sunny (!) Glasgow this week. I joined Julia (Jules) Salmond, Fraser Tough and Kirsty McKenna to champion the essential role the financial markets will play in supporting a streamlined, just transition to net zero in the UK. The level of ambition has jumped but not at at the pace and scale needed. Lenders have a key role as stewards of this transition; to guide their most intensive customers and clients; to effectively allocate transition finance; to take a robust and strategic approach to transition planning; to embed people and communities at the heart do the transition journey; and critically to accelerate the level of collaboration with government, regulators and one another. Special thanks to Ian Davey and the team at Fintech Tables #sustainablefinance B4NZ

    Automating Carbon Accounting

The second stellar panel at yesterday’s FinTech-Tables Climate Collaboration Forum at Barclays Glasgow campus supported by Zühlke Group covered whether banks were doing enough to support the transition to #NetZero. 📋 Kirsty McKenna (FinTech Scotland) reminded us that while sustainability is top of mind for many, not enough tangible action is being taken. 📉 Fraser Tough (NatWest) highlighted the importance of building models and tools to help customers understand their emissions. He also emphasised that educating customers is one of the biggest challenges, with different banks quantifying emissions in diverse ways. He summed it up well: “All calculations are wrong, but some are better than others.” 🏦 Julia (Jules) Salmond (CienDos) stressed the need to rebaseline as we progress and improve methodologies and metrics, acknowledging that we don’t have all the answers yet. Banks can lead by using themselves as testbeds for supply chain sustainability - a topic we discussed later in the day during the roundtable sessions. 💰Elliot Cyriax (B4NZ) pointed out that unlocking capital through transition finance is key, but SMEs struggle to deal with multiple disclosure standards. How can bank relationship managers better educate and equip SMEs with the tools they need? And a great point: most carbon calculators are “random number generators” - this being due to the “garbage in” phenomenon Fraser mentioned - including the use of unspecific, generalised data rather than specific activity based inputs. 💡One common overarching theme: access to granular, accurate data is essential for making informed decisions. Without it, we’re left with “garbage in, garbage out.” It’s clear that standardisation and collaboration - including across banks and industries - will be critical to success. Overall another impressive lineup of panellists and a really useful set of insights - thank you all 💚

🌍 The global economy is at a turning point, with the green transition no longer a distant possibility but a powerful force reshaping industries, markets, and investment strategies. We are excited to announce our partnership with The Conduit for the Green Economy Forum: Financing the Green Transition, happening on 6 November 2024! We’re particularly proud to share that our own Hannah Cool will be speaking on a crucial topic: The Fossil Fuel Dilemma: To Exit or Engage? Since COP28 signaled the "Beginning of the End" for fossil fuels, the threat of stranded assets has become more pressing. While 75% of investment companies are engaging with high-emission industries to foster sustainable transformation, a growing number of conscious investors are turning to divestment. But which approach—engagement or divestment—is more effective in phasing out fossil fuels and ensuring a just transition? This session will explore the risks and rewards of both paths and highlight actionable strategies investors are using to accelerate the shift to a greener future. This event is a pivotal gathering for leaders in finance, sustainability, and innovation. We're thrilled to collaborate with The Conduit to drive forward these critical conversations and shape the future of green finance. 🔗 Discover more and request your invite to this exclusive event here, use the code FTGB4NZ for a 10% discount: https://lnkd.in/eUhPGskP We can’t wait to see you there!

🌍🎉 Congratulations to Santander UK on the release of their insightful report highlighting the urgent need for green and digital skills to drive productivity and meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving economy! At B4NZ, we know how critical green skills are to unlocking the full potential of the UK's transition to net zero—particularly for scaling up initiatives like retrofitting, one of our core workstreams. Santander’s research is a timely reminder that investment in education, training, and leadership is essential as we prepare the UK workforce for the societal shifts we’re facing, from the impact of AI to the transition to net zero. With six in 10 workers needing training by 2027, Santander's call for action to bridge the skills gap is vital. Let's continue collaborating to ensure the UK is equipped for the green and digital future! Polly Harrold Fiona Hyde MIEMA CEnv Wendy Whewell BA (Hons) ACIB Oliver Breen Isabel Giulia Silva Oliveira

Education and skills will play a critical role in improving the UK’s productivity and economic growth. Our new report, Tomorrow’s Skills (http://ms.spr.ly/6043mQ9ET), highlights the transformational effects that AI, climate change and hybrid working will have on the future workforce, and how important it is that the government focuses their National Plan for Skills on equipping people for these changes. Our research shows the UK workforce is spending 20% less time on training than they were a decade ago, but 86% see the importance of having access to professional skills training throughout their working lives. At Santander UK we invest significantly in lifelong education and skills development. To help meet the needs we raise in our research, we’ve worked with xUnlocked and Fearless Adventures to launch a new education initiative on our online learning platform, Santander Open Academy, which gives people the chance to develop their skills in digital, leadership and net zero. The course content is video-led and easy to access, presented by experts in their field such as Keira Walsh and Charles Leclerc, to help ensure an engaging and accessible learning experience.
