“Formidable means unstoppable. It means one of the best. Powerful and capable. A force for good. Type 31 is just that.” Today we’re cutting steel on HMS Formidable, marking the official start of the build of the third of five Inspiration Class frigates we’re building for the Royal Navy at our world-class Rosyth facility in Scotland. A recent deep dive into STEM career provision in schools and colleges across the UK, conducted by one of our partners EngineeringUK, has highlighted the need for improved STEM career support in UK schools and universities. Inspiring the next generation and educating them about the vast career opportunities in STEM is something we’re hugely passionate about. Whether that is through direct work experience placements, our STEM outreach programmes for schools, or our hugely popular Festival of Engineering events, securing the future pipeline of talent in STEM careers is something we’re 100% committed to. With the report revealing that just 15% of students have done STEM work experience, we’re proud to be one of the STEM employers providing these placements. We’re committed to getting the right people, with the right skills, in the right place, so we can continue to deal with the ever-evolving complex challenges our customers face. Neil Young, our Group Engineering Capability Director, discusses what we offer in this article, where you can also check out the full report: https://lnkd.in/ejweiQUX

As we continue to support the UK’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, it was great to share an update on our Type 31 frigate programme and how we’re supporting the local economy in Scotland. The visit was also an exciting opportunity for our apprentices and Production Support Operatives to discuss the important work they’re doing at Rosyth.

Inspired by his grandfather who had a long career in the nuclear industry and knowing nuclear was going through a period of growth, although he didn’t have any nuclear specific experience, he decided to go for it - and now recommends others do the same! We’ve had a busy second day at the Warsaw Security Forum. The day started with a working breakfast discussing how we can strengthen women’s voices in security and defence. Jo Rayson, Managing Director of our training business attended: “It was an inspiring start to the day, where I joined over 50 women in influential roles across security and defence. It was great to be part of uplifting discussions about empathy, collaboration and mentoring, focused on how we embrace the contribution we are making to the industry.” We also had the opportunity to meet with Defence Minister Lord Coaker, where we discussed UK government support for the defence industry, and Ewa Kittel-Prejs, Director Central and Eastern Europe, and Jo Rayson gave an insightful overview of our capabilities and spoke about how we’re positioned to further support the defence industry in Poland. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and building lasting partnerships to help create a safe and secure world, together. #WSF2024 #WomenInDefence
