Award-winning screenwriter and playwright James Graham delivered a powerful call to action to the UK television industry at the Edinburgh TV Festival - Supported by Screen Scotland last night, articulately underscoring the cultural power of television and the responsibility of the industry’s gatekeepers to make sure those writing and making television reflect all the many varied, brilliant perspectives and life experiences within our society. He highlighted, as reported by the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre, that only 8% of people working in television today are from a working-class background - the lowest percentage of people from lower socio-economic backgrounds in television in at least a decade. Last year, we began reporting the percentage of our members from lower socio-economic backgrounds (as defined by the Social Mobility Commission) as part of our diversity data and as of October 2023, this comprises 19% of BAFTA members. Thanks to James for pointing to our work to help tackle socio-economic inequality in the screen arts and help more talented people get a foot in the door. Our free cross-industry guide on socio-economic barriers in the screen arts features 16 leading creatives and practitioners, including Danny Brocklehurst, Aisha Bywaters, Jack O’Connell, Charlotte Regan and Moo Yu. It has over 30 recommendations for widening access and progression in the screen arts for those from working class backgrounds, as well as highlighting ideas for authentic representation and storytelling on-screen. The BAFTA albert 2023 Annual Review is here. This is the most comprehensive sustainability review that albert has released, looking at the progress made by the film and TV industries in improving environmental sustainability. 2023 was the year the industry reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability with over 3,000 productions tracking their carbon footprint, more films and international productions using the toolkit and the first ever Climate Themes Snapshot revealing 31% of albert certified productions included climate references. In this year’s report, we have also highlighted the significant efforts across the industry to address the impact of climate change on production and raise awareness through storytelling. We’re excited to showcase case studies of these initiatives, including a special feature on ITV's Emmerdale, which you can see brought to life in the video below.
