Congratulations to Stir Bakery the winners of Speciality Bread Product sponsored by BAKO at the Baking Industry Awards 2024 Described as nutrient dense and high in fibre, the loaf is comprised of 30% sprouted grains – emmer, einkorn, spelt, and rye – which provide a bittersweet and nutty flavour. It uses natural leaven, gentle kneading, and a long slow rise to preserve the strength of its softer wholegrain flours. Judges found the “incredible texture and flavour” of this sourdough was elevated even further with the bespoke presentation of its own baked plywood stable and branding on top. We are delighted to sponsor these awards and see our industry coming together to celebrate each others success #BAKO #BakeryAwards

BAKO Team - Kilimanjaro Challenge Friday - Day 8 - Rest Day After a well deserved rest and a good night's sleep in the hotel the team are out exploring today. Lucy, Joanna and Marta decided to go and explore more of Africa on a Safari, meanwhile Ian decided to rest and go and visit the local orphanage to donate sweets and old football shirts to the children. After breakfast Lucy, Joanna and Marta met the driver and the tour guide for a safari briefing. After this they travelled east to the Tarangire National Park. The Park runs along the line of the Tarangire River and is mainly made up of low-lying hills on the Great Rift Valley floor. Its natural vegetation mainly consists of Acacia woodland and Giant African Baobab trees, with huge swamps in the south. Both the river and the swamps act like a magnet for wild animals, during Tanzania's dry season. The Tarangire National Park is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. Lucy, Joanna and Marta enjoy a picnic lunch inside the Park and do two exciting morning and afternoon game drives, along the Tarangire River. Late afternoon they depart for Arusha where they will end the safari adventure. Ian visited Faraja Orphanage Children's Home which was established by Faraja Maliaki in 2008 to support all the children coming from difficult situations around the villages of Arusha. Some of their stories are truly heart breaking. Our guides for this experience Kilimanjaro Climbing Company have been supporting the Orphanage since 2016 by donating $20 from every trekker and buying rice, oil and other essentials they need. The Orphanage supports children from babies being found abandoned on the streets up to 18 years old. The trekkers are more than welcome to visit the Orphanage to meet these amazing little guys after the challenge. Ian has travelled to the orphanage to give out Rice, oil etc and some treats as well as spend some time with them. Some of the trekkers also volunteer and help with projects like painting the rooms, helping with the school. The orphanage is situated on the outskirts of Arusha and has from 50 - 80 children. Food and oils, clothing are the main things they need. Please continue your support for Team BAKO during theses final stages of this amazing challenge for Dementia UK. BAKO Team - Kilimanjaro Challenge Thursday - Day 7 - Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate Rongai Route Elevation: 3.720m to 1.980m Distance 15km Trek Time: 6-7 Hours Climate: Moorland & Rain Forest Feeling refreshed after the big day, the team woke up to celebratory breakfast where the porters and guides congratulated the team in their unique, special way! As the Team continued their descent by passing Mandara Hut down to Marangu Gate. Also passing back through the heath and forest zones. Taking moments to look back at the summit through the rain forest- an amazing feeling to know that they once stood there a few hours ago. All the group are doing well, Ian is doing much better now he is at a lower altitude. After making their way to Marangu Gate and off the mountain, the team collected their completion certificates and their minibus driver took them back to the hotel for a lovely hot shower with an evening of celebrations. Please support Team BAKO during these final stages of this amazing challenge to help raise money for Dementia UK. BAKO Team - Kilimanjaro Challenge SUMMIT NIGHT Wednesday - Day 6 Kibo to Gilmans Point to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut Rongai Route Elevation: 4.50m to 5.681m to 5.895m to 3.702m Distance: 6km ascent/10km descent Trek Time: 6 hours ascent and 5-7 hours descent Climate: Stone screed and ice fields - glaciers The wake-up tea was served at 11:30 pm with the departure at midnight. After a hot drink and some biscuits, the team began their challenge for the summit. The team's 6-hour climb began in the dark with headlamps and guides to show them the way. Always remembering the golden rule 'pole, pole,' which means slowly, slowly. There were several landmarks on the way, William's Point at 5.131m, and Hans Meyer Cave at 5.259m that act as a milestones to break up the journey and provide the team with some measure of progress. At Gilman's Point (5.681m) the team would be able to see what would be the most magnificent sunrise. After taking photos at the sign and enjoying the fantastic views of Mawenzi, continuing their climb on part of the Marangu Route for 1-2 more hours to reach their ultimate goal - the summit- the highest peak of Africa - Uhuru Peak at 5.985m. Huge congratulations to these guys as they stand on the roof of Africa !! What an amazing achievement! After a few moments at the summit, due to the altitude and cold, it is important to start their descent. After the descent, the team will be congratulated by the porters and guides at Kibo Camp where a hot lunch will be issued to the team. They will have a chance for a break before their next descent down to Horombo Hut. After this long day, the team will enjoy a hot dinner and their last night on the mountain. Lucy, Joanna and Marta made it to the summit this morning. Unfortunately Ian, stayed back at Kibo Camp as his oxygen level were at 70% and had made the decision not to go. We are so proud of each and every one of you team BAKO for undertaking such an amazing challenge! You are all amazing!! Huge well done to everyone! 👏 👏 👏 👏 We can’t thank everyone enough for their support so far but our fundraising doesn’t stop there . . . please support Team BAKO during these final stages of this amazing challenge to help raise money for Dementia UK.
