  • Join us this Saturday for Refracted Geographies: the annual Architectural History MA Symposium. The 2023-24 Architectural History MA cohort has looked to challenge the established canons of architecture and propose new perspectives. This year's one-day symposium is structured in three thematic parts: Architectural Humanities – Affective Architectures – Fragmented Histories. It reflects the global scope of the cohort's research and their diverse approaches, with research spanning disciplinary and geographical boundaries, and subjects ranging from colonial anthropologies of Antarctica to constructed images of Asia within Europe. Organised by Architectural History MA students Catherine Cull Thomas, Rodney von Daffer-Jordan, Ed Davison, Yanqi Huang, Radhika Jhamaria and Pimchanok Na Patalung. A publication will accompany the symposium, with sample copies available to browse on the day. 🗓️ 10:00-17:10, Saturday 09 November 📍 Room 6.02, 22 Gordon Street https://lnkd.in/euXJtpJv

  • A new book addresses spatial boundaries as places where social and political conditions are intensified and where new spatial practices of architectural resistance arise. Architectures of Resistance: Negotiating Borders Through Spatial Practices is co-edited by Nishat Awan, Professor of Architecture & Visual Culture at UCL Urban Laboratory, and contributors include The Bartlett School of Architecture's Associate Professor and Co-Director of Ethics, Mohamad Hafeda. Moving across contemporary, historical, and speculative conditions of borders, the volume discusses new and innovative forms of architectural, artistic, and political practice that facilitate constructive human interaction. Architectures of Resistance is published by Leuven University Press and available now. Find out more and purchase Architectures of Resistance: https://lnkd.in/ebXkNMYS

  • On Thursday 14 November, join us for Author-itative? A Venture in Decentring Master Narratives and Master Pieces, followed by a drinks reception. The event will launch A Practical Guide to Architectural Drawing (RIBA Publishing, 2024), a new book by The Bartlett's Guang Yu Ren (Director of History & Theory) and Edward Denison (Professor of Architecture & Global Modernities). The book was researched and sourced exclusively from the RIBA Drawings Collection, the world’s largest and most prestigious archive of architectural drawings, and encourages students to engage with the collection physically, intellectually, and critically. The authors will reflect on their decentred approach to the subject - as an archive of coloniality, and a means of constructing and sustaining an authoritative voice for the discipline of architecture that privileges western (invariably British) perspectives, experiences and values. With respondents Fiona Orsini, Curator of the RIBA Drawings Collection, and Neal Shasore, Director of the London School of Architecture. Book your place here: https://lnkd.in/guFKhd8c
