Facts still matter: Our statement on USAID funding and our work. https://bbc.in/3WROtWT
About us
In a world where media can be divisive and untrustworthy, we believe in the power of media and communication to do good. Our work reaches millions of people facing insecurity, inequality and poverty with information they can trust. We support the independent media essential to democracy and development. And we inform, connect and inspire change in our audiences, providing trusted information, stories and ideas that generate debate and discussion and bridge divides. We reach more than 100 million people a year – helping to save lives and improve health, protect livelihoods, challenge inequality and build more peaceful and democratic societies. BBC Media Action is not funded by the BBC Licence Fee, and instead relies on the generous support of our donors.

We met Aminata in Freetown, Sierra Leone during the production of our radio programme Wae Gyal Pikin Tinap (When a Girl Child Stands). She told us how she saved half of the money she earned by begging on the street and used it to start a business when she was just 13 years old. In 2024, we used our digital and research expertise to support Unicef’s Oky to empower girls and remove the stigma around periods and puberty in Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea. In low- and middle-income countries girls often have little or no access to information about menstrual health education. Unicef’s Oky digital menstruation product app aims to change this, providing fun, easily accessible content. Aisha, affectionately called Mommy, is blind. She plans to marry someone who accepts her desire to have children when she is ready. She says it's important to plan when to have a child, and how much space to leave between babies. “Having a shared perspective on child spacing will help secure our children's education and development”, she says. Our IFPLAN project used radio drama, information and discussion programmes and social media to raise awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights for adolescent girls and young women with disabilities. The goal was to empower them to make informed choices about their family planning needs. Inspirational stories from young women like Elizabeth and Rehama are the lifeblood of Niambie - our radio show in Tanzania that’s celebrating 10 years! Niambie (meaning ‘tell me’ in Swahili’) is made by and for young people, and counts challenging gender inequality among its many aims. Friends Elizabeth and Rehema told Niambie how a change in Tanzanian law allowed them to return to school, after they were excluded for becoming pregnant. Raksmey Romas is a video editor from an indigenous community who trained in journalism at the Women’s Media Centre of Cambodia, through a BBC Media Action-funded course. The training has helped her to report on her community’s issues, including child marriage and preventing school drop-outs, bringing their underrepresented views to the outside world. She is also able to translate their indigenous language into content aimed at leaders, so they can better understand their needs and provide services for them. We are celebrating 10 years of our radio show Niambie (meaning ‘tell me’ in Swahili) in Tanzania. “Young people who listen to our shows are taking actions to take control of their lives,” says Anna Bwana, who was Niambie’s first project manager and is now our country director. Anna joins us at our interactive event exploring the transformative impact of media in reframing the narrative on women’s and girls’ rights. Omosefe means ‘a child is worth more than wealth’, and it’s under this name that our Nigeria team is addressing sex trafficking in Edo state. They are putting survivors’ stories front and centre, their strength and struggles – and shining a light on the complexities of this issue. Our ‘Garri Girl’ storyline is a work of fiction – but it is based on true stories of young women and girls who have been pulled into trafficking. By tackling this issue using a survivor-led approach, we aim to shift the narrative – and the reality – to help build a better future for girls and women in Nigeria. Learn more about the project here in a blog by Folashade Akashoro: https://bbc.in/4hqnrNw #TacklingTrafficking #IWD2025 #ForAllWomenAndGirls #WomensDay #Nigeria #BBCMediaAction
