𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 🧬 It's been great to welcome collaborators and partners to the Earlham Institute today for our User Meeting of the National Bioscience Research Infrastructure in Transformative Genomics - a brilliant showcase of the science that is being enabled by the technologies and expertise of the NBRI team. Transformative Genomics, supported by BBSRC, brings together specialist facilities, equipment, and knowledge in #genomics and #bioinformatics. There are ten NBRIs across the UK, with four located on the Norwich Research Park, including two at the Earlham Institute, and at the John Innes Centre and Quadram Institute. We work with a range of organisations and partners to translate knowledge and expertise and provide access to our facilities and platforms. Today we heard talks from the community working with the NBRI team, on a diverse set of topics including #spatialtranscriptomics, #longreads, and questions in health research. This week, we were delighted to join the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to celebrate their 30th anniversary, and the launch of their new strategy. On Wednesday 12 March, we co-hosted a well-attended drinks reception which provided an opportunity for people from across the #biosciences to explore materials highlighting bioscience achievements delivered over the last 30 years. Our Chief Executive, Dr Mark Downs CBiol CSci FRSB, spoke at the reception, highlighting the work of the Royal Society of Biology, and introducing our new 2025-2027 strategy. Then today, Thursday 13 March, our President, Professor Sir Ian Boyd FRS FRSB, gave the keynote speech, talking about the future of bioscience, and how our work fits into the wider biosciences, national and geopolitical landscapes. 

This week we're highlighting some plant-based protein innovations being developed across the UK with support from Innovate UK. Innovate UK and BBSRC’s Novel Low Emission Food Production Systems competition has invested in industry-led, collaborative projects looking at the development of alternative proteins such as plant-based and lab-grown options, which can have a lower impact on land and water resources. Rootiful, a plant-based ingredients company, is working in collaboration with the University of Leeds and Baker Perkins, to explore the boundaries of current low-emission processes for texturising proteins, and the feasibility of alternative technologies to produce alternative proteins in support of the UK’s capability to supply and advance the alternative protein market. A big thank you to everyone who attended our 30th anniversary celebrations in Edinburgh last night. It was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on three decades of discovery, impact and world-class bioscience. The celebrations continue today with an agenda full of exciting sessions on the past, present and future of bioscience.

Our Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) programme is supporting the invaluable work of these dedicated individuals and teams through this new SSI initiative.

I am pleased to share that registration is open for the first "insight" event for the Land Use for Net Zero (LUNZ) Footprint project. The event will take place at Harper Adams University, Shropshire on Tuesday 25 March (12.00 to 16.00).
