John Roycroft, Principal and Chair of Civil and Structural Engineering has been awarded the prestigious Milne Medal from the IABSE - International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. The award highlights an individual’s excellence in all aspects of structural engineering. It is a fantastic recognition of John’s contribution to the industry as well as his commitment to creating structural solutions that balance innovation with practicality, leaving a lasting impact on the design community. John’s design philosophy centres on the importance of early collaboration and clear communication between engineers and architects. He encourages his teams to engage with clients and architects from the outset, believing that this teamwork approach leads to optimal, integrated solutions. Known for his passion for drawing, John frequently hosts sketching workshops that empower young engineers to build their communication skills and confidently convey their design concepts - a practice he views as essential to effective engineering. Reflecting on his career and this recognition, John said: “Receiving the Milne Medal is an incredible honour, and I would like to thank IABSE for the acknowledgement. While digital technology has transformed our industry, I believe the best tool remains the humble pen or pencil. Sketching is a brilliant way to think, solve problems, and collaborate, and working with people to develop ideas has been the most enjoyable aspect of my career.” John will further share his insights in the 2024 Milne Lecture, titled Send Me a Sketch, on 14 November at the Institute of Structural Engineers in London. #IABSE #MilneMedal #ExcellenceInStructuralEngineering

Worcestershire’s first brand-new station in over 100 years was part of a wider £50 million-plus rail investment programme in the county. It’s always good to visit a BDP project during a weekend away with the family (not echoed by anyone else in the family!). Although now a couple of years old, the BDP- delivered project for Buckingham Group and Mott MacDonald still looks impressive, even in the grey autumn weather, @Jon-Scott Kohli. In 2023, the station recorded 500,000 users, a milestone originally forecast for 2030. This demonstrates the significant public interest in a modal shift to rail and highlights how important the railway is for economic development and sustainability. #BDP #MottMacDonald #Regeneration

Looking forward to presenting the National Children’s Hospital Dublin as an example of ‘architectural design through an urban lens’ - a big hospital conceived as a little city.
Sometimes we need to look back before we move forward. Two presentations will provide insights into the unique conditions of hospital typologies and their impact on our health. Mungo Smith, MAAP Architects will present two hospital case studies, 50 years apart, and question whether the similarities are superficial or fundamental, and what lessons can be learned for future hospital design. Benedict Zucchi, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), will present a range of case studies which embody a "Big House, Little City" typology, drawn from his recently published book. The transport sector in Asia serves as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with several countries facing severe air quality issues, due to outdated and poor-quality transport systems. Jeremy Farrington, Head of Asia Pacific at BDP recently spoke with APAC Outlook Magazine about how to design and plan for sustainable mass transit systems in Asia, addressing the most pressing issues facing the continent, identifying the challenges the countries need to overcome, and explaining BDP's involvement in providing game changing solutions for the pan-Asia transport market. BOXPARK's famous repurposed shipping container design and diverse street food and events offering is coming to Birmingham! The fourth BOXPARK designed by BDP after successful partnerships in Croydon, Wembley and Liverpool has been given planning approval! The new design will see the venue situated under the historic Floodgate Street railway in Digbeth, repurposing the grand brick arches to create an authentic and contemporary space. The new cultural hotspot in what is being described as 'Britain's coolest neighbourhood' establishes a dynamic setting that can host events and house independent businesses, enhancing creativity and fostering collaboration among local businesses and artists. Gavin Elliott, Principal at BDP, said: "Designing BOXPARK Digbeth has been about embracing the character of the historic Floodgate Arches and making something that truly immerses itself in the spirit of the area." The new Government's pledge to deliver the biggest increase in social and affordable housebuilding in a generation has taken it's first steps as a new mixed-use, affordable housing development in Brentford welcomes it's first residents. The BDP-designed Tintern, Sonnet, and Hamlet houses on Brentford High Street deliver 96 apartments for social rent across three residential buildings comprising of two-, three- and four-bedroom unit configurations. The energy-efficient apartments were designed with families in mind with innovative spatial designs, providing maximum occupancy flexibility. The design placed great emphasis on the High Street elevation and Bradbury Yard with recessed and bolt-on balconies creating a range of individual characters to each elevation. Landscaped gardens seamlessly connect the High Street to the rediscovered waterside. The community will benefit from a new destination where established brands and emerging local enterprises thrive alongside open spaces for exercise, relaxation, and social interaction.
