As anyone in the cybersecurity industry knows, October marks an important anniversary for the sector. The government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme turns 10 this year. And, alongside a bunting-draped celebration at the UK House of Lords, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has commissioned the Cyber Essentials Impact Evaluation Report. Undertaken by Pye Tait Consulting , the study examines the scheme’s effectiveness, organisations’ motivations for certification, and the ease of adopting its technical controls. However, the report is also 110 pages long. So, to save you several hours, here are our key takeaways from the report. #BeCyberSmart

The way cybercriminals target businesses is changing. And mobile threats are at the forefront of this. For example, 80% of phishing sites specifically target mobile devices or are designed to function on desktop and mobile. What’s more, it’s estimated that the average employee is six to 10 times more likely to fall for SMS phishing attacks than email-based attacks. However, at the same time, there’s a lack of mobile-specific solutions designed for small businesses. So, we’ve decided to step up by overhauling our previous mobile version of CyberSmart Active Protect to ensure customers are secure no matter what device they’re using. #BeCyberSmart

Yesterday the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology released their Cyber Essentials Impact Evaluation report which demonstrates the positive impact CE is having on the businesses that adopt it. However, there is still a lack of awareness around Cyber Essentials so I was pleased to see that leading banks Barclays UK, Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide Building Society, NatWest, Santander UK and TSB Bank are all now promoting and incorporating the scheme in their supplier requirements. Let's hope other businesses follow this example to secure their supply chains and help raise cyber security expectations across the UK. As Cyber Essentials celebrates its 10th anniversary, businesses across the UK are being urged to reinforce their digital defences to stay ahead of cyber threats. Today, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), alongside the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and leading banks including Barclays UK, Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide Building Society, NatWest, Santander UK and TSB Bank have issued a joint statement emphasising the critical importance of cyber security across business supply chains. (https://lnkd.in/gxVbtzvP) Also being published today, the Cyber Essentials scheme - impact evaluation details the impact of the Cyber Essentials scheme and how effective it is in improving the cyber security of businesses and organisations. It found: Over 85% of users report a better understanding of cyber risks. 92% fewer insurance claims are made by businesses and organisations with the Cyber Essentials controls in place The scheme continues to gain momentum, with over 190,000 Cyber Essentials certificates awarded to businesses and organisations to date, including 43,480 issued in the past year alone (https://lnkd.in/eGJQZJRT)

We’re delighted to have recently received our Cyber Essentials certification. Cyber Essentials is a Government-backed and industry-supported scheme, provided by CyberSmart that helps businesses protect themselves against the growing threat of cyber attacks while providing a clear statement of the basic controls organisations should have in place to protect themselves. To achieve the certification, we have had to go through a detailed assessment of our security set up and processes to confirm we have a robust structure in place. This must be reviewed annually to ensure we still meet the required standards. The partnership will focus on delivering CyberSmart’s cyber risk management platform, including Cyber Essentials certification, products CyberSmart Active Protect and CyberSmart Vulnerability Manager, and cyber insurance to e92plus’ partners throughout the UK and Ireland.
