We work to grow philanthropy in the UK

About us

The Beacon Collaborative aims to grow philanthropy in the UK, encouraging more wealth holders to transfer more of their private assets for the public good. We work in close partnership with other organisations that encourage philanthropy and social investment. We aim to attract more in donations to charity and social investment every year. We do this by: - Raising public awareness around the capacities of philanthropy in the UK - Understanding more about who gives, and why, with a view to maximising the opportunities for major donors to give more - Working with advisors to ensure everyone receives encouragement and quality advice about how to build social investments and donate significant funds in their financial planning. We will build on the expertise of the professional services sector and improve the regulatory framework for philanthropy in the UK. - Encouraging existing philanthropists to influence their peer networks, so that giving becomes contagious. - Working to engage government and political groups, to create the right climate for philanthropy in the UK.

“We want a new partnership with investors, businesses and charities. All the best examples of things that are built to last are when they have been built together,” says Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Department for Culture, Media and Sport in the foreword to the latest market sizing report from the Impact Investing Institute.   It is great to see charities and philanthropy referenced in the report.   As Lisa Nandy’s quote suggests, we cannot achieve the full potential for positive, sustainable change in our communities and the wider world without the effective deployment of capital across the full spectrum of capital.   Responsible business, ESG, impact investing, social investing and philanthropy all play different and important roles in driving positive change for people and planet. The more these different approaches are understood and supported to thrive, the better able we will be to build a sustainable future together.   This is the Impact Investing Institute's second report on the UK’s impact investment market showing £77 billion in total and a striking 10% annual growth rate.   The report is available at: https://lnkd.in/eT8Uy8eA

We welcome Dr Beth Breeze OBE’s article in Alliance magazine, which acknowledges how, with more experience in the philanthropy sector, Rutger Bregman’s thoughts have changed. Over the last five years, we have done in depth research into the philanthropy ecosystem and seen that once philanthropists have started on their donor journeys, and recognise the impact they can personally make, they are inspired to continue, and often increase, their giving. In his post, Rutger Bregman advocates that giving 10% of one’s wealth should become the cultural norm – and even if you start at 1%, you’ll soon discover the difference you can make. And to quote, “it’s going to change your life”. Advocacy like this will encourage others to start their donor journeys. #philanthropy #philanthropists #donors #giving #charity

Great to see such thoughtful consideration for how philanthropy, impact investment and responsible business can work together to tackle the challenges we see in our communities and in the wider world. An Office for the #ImpactEconomy at the heart of the next government could overcome the structural barriers that are holding back greater giving and impact investment. There are powerful partnerships already underway in the #ImpactEconomy and that are driving change on social and place-based challenges. The next government has a huge opportunity to harness this innovation, talent and expertise. https://lnkd.in/ewiEdsBy

Helping governments, philanthropists, investors and businesses build the impact economy

Really interesting to see former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Sir Stephen Timms champion the creation of an Office for the #ImpactEconomy in City AM. With constrained public spending, the next government has a game-changing opportunity to harness the power of the #ImpactEconomy — a coalition of purpose-driven businesses, social & impact investors and philanthropists — to unlock a potential £700 billion for national priorities. Prioritising partnerships with philanthropists, businesses and social & impact investors could help tackle the UK’s most pressing social, environmental and economic challenges. Here’s what an Office for the #ImpactEconomy could help achieve: ⬆️ Increase philanthropy to 2% of GDP 📈 Boost UK GDP by £149 billion and business R&D by £116 billion annually, and increase capital investment by £86 billion 💷 Support a £5.3bn pay rise for the lowest paid 💡 Unlock up to £50bn in social impact investment to tackle social issues and inequalities 🏢 Boost employment and reduce benefits payments by nearly £1 billion 🏡 Increase social housing availability tenfold by 2035, contributing £50 billion towards social & affordable housing  🌱 Double environmental philanthropy to £5.4 billion  🎯 Establish a £1bn Missions Fund for social outcomes partnerships to tackle child poverty, reduce reoffending and improve youth outcomes, generating nearly £9 of public value for every £1 spent 🏥 Deliver around £2 billion of fiscal savings on health spending 📢 Show your support by re-sharing this post with #ImpactEconomy. Sir Stephen Timms’s article is online here https://lnkd.in/edMEVcCq 🔁 Please do reshare if you’re interested in promoting the #ImpactEconomy

"It's funny because, to me sometimes, community can be a bit of a buzzword. But at every stage that is who we've considered." Three years ago rapper Stormzy dreamed of opening a space for young people in the area in which he grew up — to give them opportunities they would not have otherwise had. Now his vision has been realised. This month, in partnership with Adidas, he opened #MerkyFC HQ - a state-of-the-art facility with a full-size football pitch, recording studio and gaming centre in Croydon, south London - minutes from where he grew up. "I still can't believe we've done it, created an entire space that encompasses everything that's been part of my journey. Music, football, youth culture, community and gaming," he told the BBC. This is such a brilliant example of place-based philanthropy: when a wealth holder gives back to their community. By working in partnership with business, Stormzy has been able to give young people in Croydon something they need via a project born from his passion, knowledge and connection to his local area. https://lnkd.in/e_7553QX #placedbasedphilanthropy #givingback #impact

NPC (New Philanthropy Capital) has released the Partners for Change report, which was funded by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). It's an insightful strategy proposal for the next government to consider as it's packed out with information about what the government could do to move philanthropy in the UK forward. There are: 🎯 Eight recommendations for putting the partnership between government and charities on a strong footing 🎯 Nine recommendations in priority policy areas where civil society and government can work together to make change 🎯 Nine recommendations about how charities and funders can work together. Includes topics about in-house giving strategies, how impact and data can be used, ways the inequalities that society is addressing could be addressed, how giving can be used to respond to the climate crisis, how giving can guide the government's response to criminal justice, and how children and young people should have a seat at the table. Let's continue to work together to make change happen. #makingchange #philanthropy #givingstrategies https://lnkd.in/ewu7yTHS

When the The Lankellychase Foundation announced that it would be spending down its endowment "so that money can flow freely to those doing life-affirming social justice work", the decision provoked lots of attention, discussion and some criticism. Now, Chief Executive Julian Corner has shared the first in a series of blogs about the learning that brought the Foundation to this point, the principles that guide its new strategy and the learning gained as it moves through the process. He writes: "Lankelly Chase has said for some time that we are part of the problem we’ve been trying to solve. We keep ourselves and our money separate from the field in which we were working: we are the ‘funder’, you are the ‘beneficiary’. "We keep the organisations we fund separate from each other through competition for our resources. Our funding criteria separates people out into winners and losers. Accountability to us as the funder separates charities from the communities they are meant to serve. "We exist in the separate world of ‘the funding sector’, with its separate networks, language and perspectives. Our investments are separate from our grant making. "We have treated these as ‘tensions’ or ‘paradoxes’ that are part of the complexity of the work. As facts of life that we have to deal with. However, we have gradually come to see them as plain contradictions... "...These aren’t just moral contradictions. They are mission-related contradictions that strike at the heart of our effectiveness. If severe and multiple disadvantage requires the dissolving of harmful, even violent, separations, this can’t be pursued through an institutional form that perpetuates separation at every turn."
