Is Chittagong port congestion putting Q4 at risk for apparel retailers? As the port continues to recover from the dual pressures of political turmoil and severe flooding that hampered operations in August, we looked to our Port Congestion Index to understand the scale of the disruption at the Bangladeshi port. August data shows that average anchor (vessel waiting) times surged 77% from 2.2 days in July to 3.9 days in August. Over the same period, container dwell times more than doubled from an average of 6.0 days to 12.7 days. The port's ability to restore normalcy to its operations over the next month will be a critical factor in determining how much this latest supply chain disruption is felt on the shelves as the holiday shopping season commences.
