Was September a washout? ☔️ Three factors had a big impact on September's retail spend. The rain 🌧️ Lower consumer confidence 🤔 And a strong comparable in September 2023 📈 Sales in UK towns and cities took a sharp downturn in September, dropping by -6.5% from September 2023, versus an annual drop of -3.1% in August. 📢 SEPTEMBER 2024 TOWN & CITY CENTRE Beauclair Ltd Spending Insights A SHARP DOWNTURN IN SALES IN UK TOWNS AND CITIES IN SEPTEMBER 2024 DUE TO A COMBINATION OF HEAVY RAIN, LOWER CONSUMER CONFIDENCE AND A STRONG COMPARABLE IN SEPTEMBER 2023. According to ✨Diane Wehrle SFIPM, Beauclair’s Brand Ambassador. Sales in UK towns and cities took a sharp downturn in September, dropping by -6.5% from September 2023, versus an annual drop of -3.1% in August.      Some of this drop may be accounted for by a relatively strong comparable in September 2023 when sales rose by +1.6% from September 2022.   However, the torrential rain that hit most of the UK for a number of days in September will undoubtedly have had a noticeable impact. Additionally, there was a large drop in consumer confidence according to the GfK Consumer Confidence indicator. All of the five key sectors, which together account for 85% of sales in towns and cities, were hit in September. The greatest impact was felt by the Food & Drink sector, with the heavy rain undoubtedly affecting his sector particularly hard due to its discretionary nature, and sales dropped by -10.1% from September 2023.   In contrast, Fashion - which has had a particularly challenging trading year - recorded a much smaller annual drop in sales in September of -4.7%.  The results for September are clearly disappointing, but looking forward to Q4 we are forecasting that sales will be stronger than last year. Part of this expected uplift is likely to be due to a bounce back from disappointing sales in Q4 last year, when sales declined annually in each of the three months.  Alongside this, the economic landscape has improved with lower price inflation, wage inflation that is exceeding price inflation, and interest rates are also starting to come down, all of which provide a rationale for cautious optimism for the remainder of 2024. Encouraging signs suggest a potential shift in consumer behaviour! While overall retail spending in August remained down compared to the previous year, we did see some interesting changes to suggest a shift in how people are spending their money. Key takeaways: • Smaller decline: The overall sales drop was less severe in August (-3.1%) compared to July (-9.3%). • Sector-specific trends: While some sectors saw continued declines, others, such as Food & Drink, showed significant signs of improvement. What does this mean for the future? It's too early to say definitively, but these trends could signal a cautious return to spending. As the economic landscape continues to evolve, businesses need to stay informed and adapt their strategies accordingly. Want to learn more? I was delighted to be invited by BBC News on to the #bbcbreakfast programme to provide #insights around the impact of the severe rain on #highstreets. 💷 Retailers are saying that it hit sales and evidence from the British Retail Consortium demonstrates price deflation reflecting discounting. I never advocate reducing prices, however, to some degree this is a seasonal impact as many retailers reduce prices in September to clear stock ahead of winter. Indeed #sales and #footfall are always lower in September than August as normal life resumes after the summer and ahead of Q4. On the plus side the return to the office for many means more #footfall in #townsandcities during the working week, hopefully delivering some additional spend. It certainly won't hurt! The proof will be in sales for September - watch out for the Beauclair Ltd #sales results for #townsandcities landing next week! #retailintelligence #retailinsights #retail #tri2024 Rendle Intelligence and Insights Nicola Butler My publicist is Katie Blake

The Fashion industry welcomed a better August with a last summer wardrobe boost! 📈 In August Fashion sales were just -1.4% below 2023 compared with -11.9% in July. And what was the likely cause of this? The weather ⛅️☔️ August remained brighter in comparison to a cool and rainy July. Beauclair can help you understand how the fashion retailers in your city are doing. Drop us a message to find out how. #Fashion #HighStreetRetail #EconomicOutlook ✨Diane Wehrle SFIPM
