Is it possible to create thriving, liveable futures without doing the collective work to acknowledge and process the destructive systems, stories and behaviours that are causing so much devastation to life on Earth today ? To human and more than human bodies. Personally I don’t believe so and my guest in this episode, the incredible Vanessa Andreotti has dedicated her life work to exploring how the dominant knowledge systems of modernity and ways of relating to ourselves, to each other and to the Earth are deeply entangled with the growing violence, divisiveness and declining health of all life on our home planet. Vanessa is Dean of Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria, Canada, Author, of the groundbreaking book - Hospicing Modernity: Facing Humanity's Wrongs and the Implications for Social Activism and Co-founder - Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures Collective. Vanessa’s life work has been in education and learning, her practice is rooted in relationality, indigenous knowledge systems and centering our entanglement with the living Earth. Have you ever spent a night alone in nature ? A chance to experience the insight and nourishment that true solitude offers - To take your deepest questions and longings onto the land - To connect with other beings and more than human intelligence - To come back into a community with fellow travellers and be witnessed sharing your story around a fire Over the years overnight solos have nourished me, challenged me and saved me again and again. For me they are an essential practice for my wellbeing, connection, courage, imagination and creativity. Proper medicine for these times. This beautiful ancient practice and rite of passage is sadly missing from modernity but we’re bringing it back on regenerating downland near the city of Bath where I live. Come and join me and my fellow guides for a weekend of deep connection and community as the descent into Autumn begins. A night and day of grounding and preparation followed by the overnight solo, return, integration and ongoing access to Becoming Crew community of practice. Living in the metacrisis can be painful, confusing and overwhelming. We live in a time of enormous existential challenges. As the world becomes more chaotic and difficult, it becomes harder to look-up. In this session with special guest teacher Ella Saltmarshe, we will expand our perspectives, exploring how becoming polytemporal can enable us to better meet this moment. We will inhabit different temporalities, and explore the nuances of what particular ways of doing time can open up for the now. We will spend time in the early days of the planet; we will get civilisational; we will cultivate intergenerational empathy; we may also talk to the birds… Ella is a founder, systems change specialist, anthropologist, writer, podcaster, teacher, activist, and a mother. Her work focuses on harnessing the power of culture, narrative and systems change - in meta and micro ways. She is a founder of the Long Time Project, which seeks to cultivate a culture of stewardship and public imagination across society. This is a participative, experimental online workshop.
