Senior Executive Producer, Factual Entertainment at Woodcut Media. I develop & produce shows with heart & humour. I campaign to improve industry standards. Bectu Bullying & Harassment Rep. Bafta full voting member.
One thing you might not know about me. In my spare time, I talk to people in the industry who have experienced bullying and harassment. I do this in total confidence and it is unpaid. I’m on the Bectu committee as a bullying and harassment rep, but honestly, I don’t think that is why people come to me. I think most people come to me as a fellow-freelancer, as someone who has lived experience of their situation, and as someone they can trust because of my campaign work, particularly with Unseen On Screen. Nothing goes any further unless the person I’m talking to agrees it. I see this as a kind of unofficial ‘triage’ for mental health in TV! Once you’ve spoken to me, and only if you would like to, I can figure out where I think you’d best be helped. It might be The Film and TV Charity , it might be Bectu - it might be both. There are many other support groups I can also introduce you to. But often, people just want to be heard. They want their distress to be acknowledged. They want to know that they’re not mad, and that what they experienced was indeed difficult. Over the last 5 years I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve spoken to, some who are representing groups of people. A friendly ear can make such a difference, but I’m sincerely hoping for the sake of the whole industry, that there will soon come a time when my phone no longer rings with these requests and that bullying and harassment no longer happens in TV.

In 1976-78 Jayaben Desai heroically led 100 mainly South Asian women in a dispute against the Grunwick photo processing factory 📷 The story of the 1976-78 Grunwick Strike, and of the immigrant women workers at the centre of those events, is one of dignity, rights, pride and solidarity in the face of institutional racism. Contribute what you can to help support this important story. Using AI to cut corners will not help create compelling stories. ITV should focus on investing in creative talent and using technology to help support storytellers rather than investing in gimmicks. https://lnkd.in/gY26HPnM

Wales’ creative industries’ growth is a fantastic demonstration of what can happen when multiple parts of an ecosystem complement each other from its creative curriculum and supportive Government, to research and innovation funding, entrepreneurship and policymakers who embed practices that support workers’ welfare #CreativeWales #MediaCymru Ffilm Cymru Wales Bectu #CultCymru Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) #ScreenAllianceWales #SgilCymru #broadcasters 6ft From The Spotlight #GoodGrowth

Wales's film and television sector continues to deliver a wealth of impressive content as well as significant sector growth and development. Data from our recent research found business turnover in the Welsh capital’s audiovisual media sector between 2021 and 2023 grew by 55% – the highest for any UK city outside London. Too often the creative industries allow a dynamic where those in power can abuse their status. Broadcasters must deal swiftly and effectively with unacceptable behaviour and walk the walk in stamping out racism. More from Philippa Childs 🗞️ https://lnkd.in/eEUCfdV7
