About us
The Behavioural Insights Team, often known by our other name The Nudge Unit, is a unique company. We started life inside No 10 Downing Street as the world’s first government institution dedicated to the application of behavioural sciences. We are now a world-leading consulting firm whose mission is to help organisations in the UK and overseas to apply behavioural insights in support of social purpose goals. Since December 2021 BIT has been wholly owned by Nesta, the UK's leading innovation charity. BIT coined the term ‘behavioural insights’ in 2010 to help bring together ideas from a range of inter-related academic disciplines (behavioural economics, psychology, and social anthropology). These fields seek to understand how individuals take decisions in practice and how they are likely to respond to options. Their insights enable us to design policies or interventions that can encourage, support and enable people to make better choices for themselves and society. Behavioural insights interventions are usually simple, highly cost-effective, and often yield surprising results.

📵 Social media and retail investing should not mix📵 🇨🇦 BIT's new behavioural research with the Ontario Securities Commission indicates that social media features and 'copy trade' functionalities used on digital investing platforms can negatively impact investors' actions. 📱 Key finding: Investors who experienced these features traded significantly more 'promoted' stocks - essentially mimicking what they saw non-experts doing, which is not sound strategy. We are thrilled to be part of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative (COPI), a global effort to turn the tide on childhood obesity in urban communities. Over the next three years, COPI will invest around £28 million to design and test solutions focused on healthier eating and physical activity. We are excited to be part of a coalition of partners including city governments, academic institutions and non-profit organisations. For BIT, this new global collaboration perfectly aligns with our mission to use behavioural sciences and robust scientific methods to help design policies and services that help people live healthier lives.
160 million children are affected by obesity. Our new Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative (COPI), built on a decade learning of Cities for Better Health, is launching in six cities across the world. We’re aiming to establish impactful and scalable solutions that work for people in some of the most disadvantaged communities. We've been delighted with the feedback and reception for our recent report "A Blueprint for Better International Collaboration on Evidence", conducted in collaboration with the UK, US, Australian and Canadian governments and funded by the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council. Not only that - but since publication, almost $60m has already been committed to funding living evidence reviews, from both the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council and Wellcome Trust. This is a pivotal development for evidence-based policymaking, and for the research community more broadly. 🔍 Think you can spot a fake investment opportunity? Take the quiz 📊 In new research, BIT and the Ontario Securities Commission found that AI-enhanced scams pose significant risk to retail investors. People invested 22% more in AI-enhanced scams than in conventional ones. However, we also tested mitigation strategies to reduce harm. A web browser plug-in that flags potential scams reduced fraudulent investments by nearly a third. Protecting investors from a new generation of scams is an urgent issue securities regulators worldwide are working to resolve. Our research report offers robust evidence to shape practical solutions. Read Route Fifty's new op-ed on how states in the US can reach sustainability goals through the promotion of heat pumps 🖋 penned by BIT Americas' very own Anna Keleher👇 🇺🇸
As states strive to meet decarbonization targets, a recent study highlights a critical gap in awareness about heat pumps, particularly in the Upper Midwest. Currently, just 16% of homes utilize heat pumps, and alarming data shows that over 75% of homeowners in this region are largely unaware of what heat pumps are and their benefits. Experts say that clearer messaging on what heat pumps do could help encourage more people to install them.
