Delighted to introduce our next Instagram Resident Felicia Simion. Hi, I'm Felicia, "ethnographies" is an ongoing photography project which aims to create visual records of customs and folkloric manifestations around contemporary rural Romania, in the context of depopulation and increasing phenomenon of migration. The series focuses on practices which take place in various regions of the country (such as Maramureș, Oltenia, Vrancea, Transylvania or villages located near Bucharest area), throughout the calendar year. I began documenting these customs during my first year of studying Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology and Folklore inside an academic context. I gradually realized that I was less interested in the past – as something that is gone forever and is impossible to relive – and more concerned about how the present is actually able to reiterate, re-contextualize and even to reinterpret the archaic. Everything is subdued to change, in order to survive; it’s the case of tradition, as well. Communities will keep their customs as long as they will be useful to them. As communities age, their practices disappear, too. As I approached the theme of cultural identity, I became more aware of the cultural diversity of my own country, but also its ephemeral character. Documenting these practices, I found myself inside a time which is neither then, nor now – a state of being located somewhere at the border between our modern anthropocentric view of the world and our ancestors’ cosmocentric perception of life. About us
Belfast Photo Festival is a charitable organisation that curates world-class photography and visual art events in diverse locations across Northern Ireland. For over 14 years, we have fostered creative dialogue, local development, and financial opportunities through commissions, entrepreneurial initiatives, and global arts leadership. We take pride in our adaptability, innovation, and resilience, which has allowed us to continuously engage with national and international audiences, positively impacting communities both locally and abroad. impacting communities both locally and abroad. In June 2024, we presented our largest and most ambitious festival yet. Thanks to core and project-specific funding, we expanded participation and deepened our environmental and social impact. A major highlight was the Island of Ireland premiere of Richard Mosse’s Broken Spectre, a profound exploration of the Brazilian Amazon that grappled with the complexities of representing climate change. Dutch artist Matthias Oostrik captivated audiences with his dystopian art installation, immersing them in AI's statistical interpretations. Additionally, 12 winners from our Open Submissions initiative had their works prominently displayed in Belfast’s iconic Botanic Garden. Our 2024 edition was accompanied by a dynamic press campaign that reached over 115 million people worldwide, drawing physical audiences of over 100,000. The festival has been hailed by Capture Magazine as one of the "best photography festivals in the world," cementing its position as the largest annual festival of photography in the UK and Ireland. Delighted to introduce our next Instagram Resident Louis Roth. Hi, I'm Louis Roth! I'm excited to share my project Fata Morgana, a series of photographs taken during three trips to Egypt's New Administrative Capital (NAC) in 2023 and 2024. The NAC is a planned city rising from desert sand, 50 km east of Cairo. Housing for 6.5 million people, along with a grand government district and vast military complexes for the autocratic regime, is under construction. While ministries moved in last year, the rest of the city remains mostly deserted, with only workers maintaining the glass façades and rose-lined streets. The high cost of apartments leaves the question of whether the city will ever be inhabited enough to justify the expense. I was captivated by its bizarre, almost sci-fi aesthetic. With strict press restrictions, access was difficult, and I was eventually arrested with an Egyptian friend after asking two men for their portrait in the Ministerial District. After intense questioning and two sleepless nights at a police station, we were released without explanation. Calling UK Based Climate Storytellers.. Don't miss this grant opportunity with Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF)..
'Climate Storytellers Fund 2024' by Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) Application Form - Now Open /// Deadline - 31st October 2024 Grants range between £3,000 and £50,000. There is a new prospectus and clear guidelines about alignment and eligibility for applicants that need to be both 'UK based' and 'content ready'. At Belfast Photo Festival we're so proud and grateful to have been a 2023 recipient, with the Isle of Ireland premiere of 'Richard Mosse's Broken Spectre' at our 10th anniversary edition. Kickstarting a move towards more environment and climate programming for 2025. All the information on the grant and past storytellers is in here: https://lnkd.in/eW9S-v-s 'There are narratives that give us hope and a feeling of optimism; these stories told well can change our outlook on life and reach wider and sometimes newer audiences. There are also deep-seated narratives that perpetuate inequality and fatalism and are some of the biggest blockers to creating change for a fairer world. It’s not enough just to talk about these ideas. To have a bigger influence on the structure of our institutions, and the rules that govern social life, ideas need to be spread widely, and carried within compelling stories that resonate with people. The Storytellers Fund aims to support people who are aiming to inspire change through storytelling to share their content more widely and reach new audiences.' #fundraising, #climate, #storytelling, #storytellers, #grant, #funding, #communities, #narrative, #socialchange

Delighted to introduce our next Instagram Resident Fernanda Soto Mastrantonio. Hello it’s Fernanda, a Chilean photographer whose work transits between documentary photography and art. This week I will be sharing my ongoing project ‘The cumbias we heard up there’. This project explores the meaning of being indigenous in Chile through the story of Deysi, a 36-year-old Aymara woman who lives between the city of Alto Hospicio and her family’s field, 5000 meters above sea level near Bolivia. Deysi and I met during a commission to capture indigenous women. After a challenging journey to find her, the project evolved into a personal and collaborative exploration of identity, displacement, and connection, as Fernanda and Deysi spent time together in the highlands, working with animals and sharing moments of laughter and reflection by the fire. You can read more about this on my website: https://lnkd.in/eSXEdqss Following along as Fernanda shares images from her series ‘The cumbias we heard up there’.. https://lnkd.in/e8dj6VDs #InstagramResidency
