“We must do today what yesterday we thought was impossible”. A powerful opening statement from Mukhtar Babayev, president of COP29. As Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Republic, Babayev is well aware of the inextricable link between humans, nature loss and climate. So what's possible right now? Despite federal setbacks for climate action, the recent U.S. election saw voters across several states make a resounding statement: conservation and climate action are priorities. 🌱 California approved a $10 billion climate resilience bond to combat wildfires, secure clean water, and build climate resilience. Washington State preserved its Climate Commitment Act, protecting funds for conservation and wildfire prevention. Minnesota renewed its Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, dedicating $2 billion to safeguard land, water, and wildlife. Suffolk County, NY committed $6 billion to water conservation, while several other states and counties advanced significant environmental initiatives. Adam Snyder from The Nature Conservancy put it perfectly: “When the issue of conservation and climate is highlighted, voters overwhelmingly support these initiatives.” 🌎💧 These wins underscore the power of local action and a growing, bipartisan commitment to environmental action regardless of the prevailing rhetoric.

Scientists are now growing starfish in labs to help revive their dwindling populations in the wild. 🧬 As keystone species, starfish play a vital role in marine ecosystems, and with threats like warming seas, their decline has severe ripple effects on biodiversity. But is lab-grown marine life a responsible approach to conservation? Or could it lead to more harm than good? This technique shows promise, but it also brings environmental and ethical concerns — like risks of reduced genetic diversity or unintended ecosystem impacts. 🌍🐟 Curious about the future of conservation? As solar farms expand across the U.S., they’re proving they can do more than just produce clean energy—they can also foster biodiversity and support local ecosystems. 🌼 Sites like the Anoka County Solar in Minnesota showcase a new approach: pairing solar with pollinator-friendly landscapes. With native wildflowers and taller panels, these projects provide crucial habitats for bees, butterflies, and birds, enhancing biodiversity while reducing maintenance costs. This dual-impact strategy addresses two global crises: climate change and biodiversity loss, whilst helping reduce costs and boost community support — a win-win.

This is a big one - science based targets for freshwater and land are being adopted. pay attention - science based targets for various aspects of nature are coming.
📢 Breaking new ground in corporate sustainability! Today at #COP16Colombia, we announce that the first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by trailblazing companies. 👇 🏔️ The first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by global luxury group Kering. 💧 Global biopharma company GSK and building materials company Holcim have adopted the first science-based targets for freshwater. The announcement comes following the conclusion of our year-long corporate pilot program, with the majority of participating companies receiving validation for some or all targets. This positive milestone comes as world and business leaders gather at COP16 in Colombia, where urgent action to preserve biodiversity and stop the destruction of nature have been at the heart of negotiations. 🌎 SBTN’s Executive Director Erin Billman said: “Our corporate pilot has shown that science-based targets for nature are both feasible and valuable, closing a critical gap in corporate sustainability. We’re pleased to see Kering, GSK and Holcim lead the way by publicly adopting the world’s first science-based targets beyond climate; demonstrating that a clear and credible pathway for ambitious action for nature is possible. The time for companies to act is now — responsibly, urgently, and with the ambition that matches the scale of the challenge.” Science-based targets for nature are a key mechanism for companies to deliver on the Global Biodiversity Framework. Aiming directly at the drivers and pressures of nature loss, science-based targets for nature will tell a company if they are taking enough of the right actions, in the right places, at the right time in order to do their part to reverse and halt nature loss by 2030. These much needed targets on nature build on and complement existing corporate targets on climate. 🌱🎯 This is just the beginning. We are pleased to see these trailblazing companies leading the way, and we look forward to seeing more companies follow suit in the months ahead. 🎉 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eTMakv4e 🔗 Explore the companies' targets in our new Target Tracker: https://lnkd.in/eepJiVtA #SBTN #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature #CorporateSustainability #NaturePositive #COP16 #KMGBF

Some of #COP16 takeaways from our Senior Consultant Elspeth Alexander.
I spent the back end of last week hanging around the ocean talks at #COP16 my main business takeaways below… 🪸 There’s only one ocean!🪸 Sounds basic, but many sessions have hammered home that the ocean is a global, interconnected system. Businesses must remember that ALL localised marine impacts are contributing to the abysmal state of our ocean. 🔵 E.g. 80% of oceanic plastic pollution starts as land-based localised pollution, then is transported via rivers to the sea. Ocean currents then transport this pollution around the globe. 🪸 Healthy oceans are more profitable than distressed oceans🪸 Planet Tracker's research on commercial tuna fishing found: 🔵 Commercial fisheries had the highest profits when tuna were fished in the FAO areas with the most stable tuna populations. This was due to efficiencies in operational costs. More fish 🟰 less time required catching fish. 🔵By 2050, projected climate change could reduce commercial tuna catch in Indonesian waters by <30% 😬 😬 This would near wipe out the industry’s profits. 🪸 Stronger ocean governance is critical for business🪸 All businesses rely on the marine environment and thus the current systemic mismanagement of our ocean is business risk. Yet many non-seafood businesses still struggle to understand their dependencies (and impacts). Here are some examples: 🔵90+% of internationally, traded goods are transported via shipping 🔵99% of all intercontinental internet traffic goes through submarine cables 🔵36% of the global population rely on fish for food security. If you work with businesses in China or Japan there is no doubt workers in your supply chain depend on fish to survive. For the first time in over a century, Chinook salmon have returned to Oregon's Klamath Basin, following the removal of four hydroelectric dams. This $500M project marks a significant win for conservationists and the Klamath tribal communities who have long fought to restore the river’s natural flow. As Roberta Frost of the Klamath Tribal Council said: “The salmon are like our tribal people. They know where home is and returned as soon as they were able.” 🐟 A powerful reminder of the resilience of nature!
