The new BEAM multi-purpose arts and culture venue in Hertford for East Herts District Council has been completed.✨ Our practice designed the building to be approachable and welcoming, with its warm brick facades and broken-up form echoing the scale and texture of the historic town. From the outside it is hard to imagine the sheer number and scale of the spaces in the building. The 550-seat auditorium, studio theatre and three-screen cinema make it one of the best equipped buildings of its type in the region. The design seeks to reduce embodied carbon and was the subject of a whole-building carbon assessment during the design stage. Aside from elements of re-used structure from the old theatre, the building makes extensive use of mass timber in the superstructure, with pre-fabricated cross-laminated timber panels forming the main walls and pitched roofs of the new cinemas and second theatre space.
