Improving our skills system is key to the Government’s growth mission. And we were delighted to welcome Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Liz Kendall and Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker to Glasswater Locks in Birmingham this week to explain how an innovative training partnership is helping local people reach their potential in the workplace. The Secretary of State also took part in a brick laying demonstration led by the site’s inspiring bricklaying apprentices and heard about West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) pioneering Path 2 Apprenticeships programme. The key lesson from Glasswater Locks is that effective skills initiatives take real focus and collaboration at a local level, particularly in the development sector which is a complex environment for new recruits to navigate. In Birmingham, the WMCA, Birmingham City Council, The Skills Centre (a fantastic training partner) and our St Joseph team work together to recruit local candidates and take them through pre-employment training, work experience and on to apprenticeships and employment. With this partnership model in place, we’ve so far managed to guide and support 122 people with accredited training and 51 local people into work or apprenticeships at Glasswater Locks, with many more opportunities in the pipeline. Thanks to everyone involved in this partnership, including our supply chain partners, particularly MPB STRUCTURES, Caxton Group Limited and Briggs & Forrester Group. A big congratulations to our fantastic teams at the Horlicks Quarter, Slough, and Kidbrooke Village, Greenwich for their awards at The London Standard New Homes Awards 2024. The Horlicks Quarter were crowned winners in the 'Best Conversion’ category and Kidbrooke Village, received Highly Commended in the ‘Best First-Time Buyer Home’ category. After closing its doors in 2018, the former iconic Horlicks Factory has been transformed into a mixed-use community which will eventually include more than 1,300 private and affordable homes and mix of welcoming public spaces. The judges said they ‘loved the considered design of this development, from the refurbished original factory sign to the high specification contemporary interiors.’ At Kidbrooke Village, we’re working in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Greater London Authority and the local community to regenerate the Ferrier Estate into a welcoming, sustainable and biodiverse neighborhood of over 5,000 homes, set within 86 acres of parkland, wetland, wildflower meadows, trees, nature trails and play areas. We want to say a heartfelt thanks to the incredible partners, suppliers and local communities who work with us to create fantastic homes and neighbourhoods we can all be proud of, and it’s fantastic to see these two neighbourhoods being recognised. #Partnership #Award #BrownfieldRegeneration #Placemaking #Communities #Heritage #NatureRecovery #ClimateAction #ESAwards #EveningStandardAwards

We are proud to announce that our inclusive approach to apprentice recruitment won the ‘Apprenticeship Initiative of the Year’ award at the London Build Expo's London Construction Awards 2024! Our new strategy was introduced last year to help drive social mobility, increase diversity and reduce unconscious bias from the process. We no longer use CVs and have adopted a anonymised application process which is blind to background, education, and experience. Instead candidates are evaluated on their ability to perform realistic job-related tasks, which have been carefully developed in partnership with ThriveMap. These assessments also give candidates a deeper understanding of our business and help them make more informed decisions about their future. We’re delighted the judges endorsed our approach who said: “Berkeley Group is leading the way in levelling the playing field, by not using CVs to assess talent and removing any bias from the selection process. This improved the number of successful diverse candidates selected for apprenticeships.” A huge thank you to our fantastic teams, supply chain and partners who made this initiative possible. #LCA2024 #Apprenticeship #FutureSkills #ShapeTheFuture #ConstructionCareers #Award #SocialMobility Catherine Hawkett Lorraine Fursland Stav Aristokle Hill Deepak Chavda Sharon Nicholls Lucy Masterson Beata Stygar Elaine Alderton Jasmine Stansfield Alice Hunt Liza Smith Lauren Ashwell Bethan Crowden

Today we’ve published new research showing high levels of public support for regenerating brownfield land within our towns and cities. The study, commissioned in partnership with British Land and Landsec and conducted by Commonplace, suggests urban communities are overwhelmingly made up of “YIMBYs” (yes in my back yard) who want to see underdeveloped sites put to good use. Berkeley Group’s Chief Executive Rob Perrins said: “Our Government clearly recognises that regenerating urban land is the most sustainable way to build new homes and drive growth. This research demonstrates that urban communities also support brownfield development and want to be involved in unlocking the positive potential of these sites. This should be hugely encouraging for ministers as they focus on lifting the regulatory barriers to regeneration and getting more homes built on underused land.” The report is based on a poll of over 1,800 people living across four urban communities (Cambridge, Camden, Manchester and Newham). Key findings include: ➡ 60% of those polled had strongly negative views of underdeveloped brownfield sites, viewing them as ugly, dirty and unsafe ➡ 73% saw the underused sites as a wasted opportunity that needs to be harnessed - for example, to deliver more affordable housing, public spaces and green places ➡ Almost 80% believe that brownfield regeneration would positively impact their local areas ➡ 75% want brownfield regeneration prioritised over other types of development Our report includes a series for policy recommendations to help unlock the potential of brownfield regeneration and harness public support for urban development. We’re celebrating the topping out of another 46 new homes for social rent at Alexandra Gate alongside our partners at Haringey Council. This is another fantastic milestone in the regeneration of the old Hornsey Gasworks, which is being brought back to life with more than 1,800 homes, nearly 500 of which will be affordable. The mixed-use neighbourhood includes the popular Hornsey Park, a children’s play area, commercial spaces and a public square with specially commissioned artworks celebrating the site’s history. A new café and nursery are set to open their doors in the coming weeks. A special thank you to Haringey Council Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning Cllr Sarah Williams, and their fantastic teams for joining the celebrations. And thanks to our excellent project team including Panter Hudspith Architects, Sheppard Robson and LDA Design. We want to give a big welcome to the 42 new graduates and apprentices who started at Berkeley Group Plc last week. Our new recruits have already been out and about seeing some of our sites, and will soon move on to their tailored training courses, working with industry-leading experts and gaining hands-on experience. Through our training programmes we continue to invest in the next generation of talent and take steps to tackle the industry’s skills challenges. We currently have around 250 employees in accredited ‘earn and learn’ training roles, which includes around 120 apprentices, over 50 graduates and 80 sponsored students undertaking at least a year of accredited training. These trainees are key to supporting the future of Berkeley, as we bring forward 32 of the country’s most challenging long-term regeneration sites. In 2024 we were ranked as the Top Graduate Employer for Property and Housebuilding by TheJobCrowd, and the 10th best graduate employer in the country across all sectors based on anonymous graduate feedback. We're wishing the best of luck to our new starters, as their induction comes to an end and they all go off to meet their mentors and teams next week. Welcome to the Horlicks Quarter, a new neighbourhood with a proud and fascinating history. This 12-acre site is sustainably located in Slough town centre and just a short walk from the new Elizabeth Line Station. It has been home to the Horlicks Factory since 1908, which produced the famous malted drink for over 100 years until closing its doors back in 2018. Since then, the former factory has transformed into a mixed-use community which will eventually include more than 1,300 private and affordable homes and mix of welcoming public spaces. Preserving the site’s #historic fabric has been central to Berkeley’s plan and was a key priority for the local council and community. The magnificent clocktower and 47-metre chimney have been carefully restored for future generations and the original factory building has been sensitively converted into 161 homes alongside a mix of communal spaces, including a gym, workspace and lounge. The building’s original steel frame has been exposed as part of a dramatic five-storey atrium, which is flooded with natural light. While outside, the factory’s beautifully detailed facades have been returned to their former glory. The Horlicks Quarter masterplan will provide 2 acres of public open space, including a civic square, a mix of natural habitats and traffic-free footpaths and cycleways which provide a convenient new route to the town centre and station. The neighbourhood includes a new café opening out onto Clocktower Square, a soon-to-open nursery, water features and more than 300 newly planted trees. Thanks to Slough Borough Council, Sheppard Robson, Bradley Murphy Design (BMD), Hankinson Duckett Associates, Sovereign Housing Association and Abri Group to name a few, for working with us to regenerate this unique site and deliver such positive outcomes for the people of Slough. #UrbanRegeneration #SustainableDevelopment #BrownfieldRegeneration #StrengtheningCommunities #HeritageRestoration #Placemaking

“To anyone looking for a career in construction, I’d say go for it.” Meet Imane Bayouni, a local Lambeth resident who has just completed her Site Management apprenticeship and is now thriving as an Assistant Site Manager at St Edward’s Oval Village regeneration project. Over the past two and a half years, Imane has been earning while learning and gaining valuable hands-on experience and knowledge in the built environment sector. Imane found her journey both challenging and rewarding. Despite initial concerns about being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, she’s been made to feel welcome and supported by her colleagues and now feels right at home. Social mobility is a key priority for Berkeley Group, and our Future Skills programmes are designed to help people of all backgrounds unlock their potential and build lasting careers. Around 9% of our workforce are in ‘earn and learn’ roles and we're committed to fostering diverse talent, addressing the industry’s skills shortage and supporting the Government’s mission to build more homes.
