Wales' most innovative and influential think tank, working to end poverty and inequality
About us
The Bevan Foundation is Wales’ most influential think tank and winner of Prospect's Think Tank of the Year 'One to Watch' 2021. We develop lasting solutions to poverty and inequality. We are an independent charity, are not aligned with any political party and do not receive government funding. We rely on the generosity of individuals and organisations to gain insights into the root causes of inequality, injustice and poverty, develop innovative solutions, and persuade decision-makers to take actions which create lasting change. Our vision is for Wales to be a nation where everyone has a decent standard of living, a healthy and fulfilled life, and a voice in the decisions that affect them. Our organisational subscription provides: - the opportunity to reach a high profile audience and raise your profile - superb opportunities to network and learn with others - multiple copies of Exchange magazine - bi-monthly briefings with unique insights into the state of Wales today Our individual supporters can also receive a number of these exclusive benefits by giving as little as £4.25 a month. We also welcome project-related commissions, charitable grants and one-off donations, large or small.

What could the legal action against the Lord Chancellor mean for access to justice in Wales? ⚖️ Earlier this year Duncan Lewis Solicitors challenged the Lord Chancellor over stagnant legal aid rates, leading to a 48% real terms cut since 1996. In Wales, the number of offices offering immigration legal aid has dropped by 60% in five years. Without enough legal aid, many people can’t afford legal help, which is essential for justice. Raising the rates to match inflation is crucial to keep these services available. Read more 👉 https://ow.ly/b6H350TX5WZ

Our research has uncovered significant barriers to accessing immigration legal help in Wales. While some of our research participants found solicitors relatively easily, most faced a long, confusing, and frustrating journey. Many experienced stress and anxiety due to repeated refusals, lack of responses, and uncertainty about their future. And, shockingly, 10% of those with ongoing legal cases (7% of all participants) found help too late to assist with their case. Recently, we held an event at the Senedd around experiences of justice in Wales. Our Experts by Experience working group have developed their own recommendations to address some of the issues identified in our recent study into people’s experiences of accessing immigration and asylum justice in Wales. At the event, kindly sponsored by Sioned Williams MS, the group presented their work to an audience of Members of the Senedd, decision-makers and stakeholders. It’s been a great day at Shelter Cymru’s #PeopleAndHomes conference in Cardiff! Our Senior Policy & Research Officer, Wendy Dearden, presented the findings from our latest reports around the impact of undersupply alongside Shelter Cymru Peer Researcher, Katey-Jo Pilling. It’s also been a vital opportunity to continue conversations with colleagues working in the housing sector, as we all consider how we can unlock more social homes in Wales.
