The current National Planning Policy Framework is not fit for purpose in responding to the climate crisis. 🏘️ So, we've joined forces with leading industry bodies to advocate for a planning system that truly addresses the scale and urgency of the climate and ecological emergency. 🤝🌍 📢 Our key proposals are: 1. The planning system must prioritise action on climate, and this should be articulated through a definition of the purpose of planning in the NPPF that reflects the crucial role of planning in securing our future in a changing climate 2. The carbon impact of planning proposals must be accounted and inform planning decisions and plan-making 3. The NPPF must be reviewed to give increased direction and urgency to the opportunities for planning and development to support resilience and adaptation. The key? Simplified, actionable guidance. Circularity offers huge opportunities - from fashion to packaging. Let's focus on reducing waste and rethinking product life cycles. Innovation is key, but scaling reuse/recycling requires better infrastructure and consumer engagement 🌱 Overcoming the ‘carbon tunnel’: There's too much focus on carbon, neglecting broader environmental impacts like biodiversity. Solutions need to address the whole ecosystem. 🚨 Regulatory pressures: New legislation around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Plastic Packaging Tax is raising the stakes. Costs and complexity will rise, but investing in innovation now will yield long-term benefits. We saw groundbreaking solutions in refill/reuse schemes and food-grade recycling - huge potential to cut emissions!
