  • Greetings Humans Today is International e-waste Day so, listen closely my furless friends. Your old electricals have the power to start fires when the batteries hidden inside are crushed or damaged in recycling and bin lorries.   Never fear, my human friend. HypnoCat is here to answer all your burning questions.    Any rechargeable item has a battery hidden within. It should always be recycled separately from your other household waste and recycling. Batteries can spark and start fires when crushed. Never bin batteries or electricals.   At least 25% of the UK humans admit to binning batteries. They don't know that some types of batteries can start fires if they’re crushed in bin lorries!    Look into my eyes. All batteries should be recycled separately, never thrown away. Remove batteries from electrical products before recycling if you can. If you’re unable to remove the battery, recycle it together with your old electricals.   When we recycle batteries, they are sorted before undergoing a process to recover materials from each battery type. These are converted into a variety of products, including more batteries and materials for the steel industry. What industrious paw-less bipeds.    Did you know that crushed batteries cause hundreds of fires every year in recycling centres, as well as bin and recycling lorries? Scary stuff! Especially when you consider there are batteries hidden in lots of common household electricals… kids toys, alarm clocks, vapes, and electric toothbrushes all have hidden batteries, which could all cause a fire if they’re crushed in a lorry. The only way to prevent fires like this and keep crews safe is to never put electricals in the bin or in your regular recycling. Recycle them separately instead. That would be purrr-fect.   It's also kinder to the planet. In 2020, less than half of batteries used in the UK were recycled. Batteries can be hazardous to the environment and humans (and especially cats) if not disposed of properly; they can contain mercury, nickel, cadmium, or lead which can leak into soil and water.   Removing the batteries and recycling them separately helps to more efficiently recover the valuable resources that the battery is made from, allowing them to be more easily reused to conserve resources and reduce waste.     What to do with broken small electrical devices if you can’t remove the battery? Recycle the whole device at your nearest household recycling centre.     Now, human. Look into my eyes again. Go watch my video. • This week's Tuesday Tip celebrates World Vegetarian Day and National Vegetarian Week. Did you know meat and diary products create twice the amount of emissions as plant-based foods? Studies have shown that vegetarian diets are also good for our health - vegetarians are less likely to die or be hospitalised for heart disease, less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and have lower blood pressure. And, of course, there's the benefits to our animal friends. You can make your business more veggie friendly by providing veggie options in the canteens, plant-based milk or even Meat Free Mondays. • Tomorrow, 21st September is Zero Emissions Day, a day to raise awareness of the impact of carbon emissions on air quality and climate change, to encourage individuals and organisations to reduce their use of fossil fuels in daily life, and to promote the use of renewable energy. Did you know in 2023, the average concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere was 419.3 ppm, the highest in human history and more than 50% higher than pre-industrial levels of CO2? Many countries have already set targets or committed to do so for reaching net-zero emissions on timescales compatible with Paris Agreement temperature goals (keeping global warming to 2 ºC and trying best to limit it to 1.5 ºC rise). In Scotland this target is net zero by 2045. To achieve this, public, private and 3rd sector organisations as well as individuals need to collaborate, and all do their bit to reduce their carbon emissions and live and work more sustainably. If you would like further advice and support on how to reduce heat and energy usage and make your business more sustainable, please get in touch or visit https://lnkd.in/eYPjn7F4 #zeroemissionsday #netzero #climatechange #fossilfuels #renewableenergy

  • Tomorrow 21st September is the beginning of FSC Forest Week 2024, a worldwide campaign which takes place in the last week of September every year and calls upon all forest stewards to help drive consumer awareness about the importance of sustainable forestry. The aim is to inspire these customers to act by choosing FSC-certified products. Did you know 1.6 billion people are reliant on forests for their livelihoods, and approximately 80% of the world’s terrestrial animal species call forests their home? It is our shared responsibility as business owners and individuals to protect these precious ecosystems and one way we can do this is by choosing FSC-certified products which help safeguard biodiversity and protect endangered species. Together, let’s make a lasting impact. As a business owner, you can get involved by auditing your supply chain and making changes to ensure the items you produce, and sell are FSC-certified and sustainable as possible. For further information on what the FSC label means and how to ensure the products you buy are sustainably sourced, please visit https://lnkd.in/dR8AQQZC. • Did you know that 62% of changes needed to achieve net zero can only happen with societal or individual behaviour change? That’s why the goal of Scotland Climate Week 2024 is to help increase the scale and pace of the changes needed by showcasing stories that reveal what we stand to gain, not lose by living more sustainably. Every year since 2016, communities and organisations from across Scotland have come together for Scotland's Climate Week. This year’s Climate Week will take place from 23rd to 29th September 2024 and will share ‘Stories for Change’ to celebrate, learn and encourage climate change. Businesses and communities are encouraged to take part to share their stories using #ScotClimateWeek to help spark new ideas and inspire others to act. For more information, tips and a toolkit, visit the https://lnkd.in/dk-XjqsS, and if you would like further advice and support to make your business more sustainable, please get in touch or visit https://lnkd.in/eYPjn7F4

  • Carbon footprint, emissions, and net zero often reference a unit of measurement called tCO2e. This literally translates to tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent (e). Tonne is a metric ton and carbon dioxide equivalent is the standard unit for counting the six main greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.   As a business owner, tCO2e is an important unit of measurement to understand when reducing your emissions, and setting and meeting carbon reduction targets, including net zero. You can learn more about Scotland’s Net Zero target and what this means for businesses on our Net Zero, why does it matter blog.   Now that we have little bit of an understanding of what tCO2e means, let’s break it down further to consider a single tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent and what this is equivalent to in terms of human usage.    One tonne of carbon dioxide is equivalent to One passenger on a return flight from Paris to New York,  Using 500 typical 2kg fire extinguishers  Driving more than 3,700 miles in a diesel car  Charging over 120,000 smartphones Powering a bungalow for 15 months. For Scotland to meet its net zero target by 2045 (relative to 1990 levels) will require action from everyone in society, including businesses. This means as a business owner establishing your current emission levels, assessing where these emissions are coming from, setting targets to reduce these, and putting actions in place to meet these targets. For further advice and support on your net zero responsibilities, and how to identify and reduce your business emissions, please get on touch or visit https://lnkd.in/eSHXt5BQ #netzero #emissions #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #carbon
