Birmingham Hospice help people from all communities access the care of their choice at the end of life.

About us

Birmingham Hospice is the new name for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and John Taylor Hospice. We are the primary provider of adult hospice care in Birmingham, providing expert palliative and end of life care to local people living with terminal diagnosis - at our hospice, in the community, or in their own homes, wherever home may be. We are also here to support families, carers and loved ones through the most difficult times of their lives. All of our services are free of charge to everyone that uses them however, lack of government funding means we are struggling to keep up with spiralling costs, making it harder for us to care for everyone who needs it. This year, we estimate it could cost £20 million to run Birmingham Hospice. 60% of this comes from the NHS, the remaining 40% has to be raised through fundraising activity, income from our shops and voluntary donations. We desperately need your help to provide vital palliative and end of life care in your local community.

This will take place on Friday 15 November from 8am to 6pm, at Austin Rose Nursing Home (90 Alvechurch Road, West Heath, Birmingham B31 3QW). Grief is a journey no one should have to take alone. Our Stepping Stones Bereavement Group brings together people who are grieving for a loved one who was previously cared for by the hospice. It is a chance to meet socially, share experiences, and provide support to fellow members. Christina Stephenson, Senior Hospice Counsellor, said: “It’s not a therapy group, it’s a social group. “Our attendees can talk about their loved one if they wish to, talk of the difficult adjustment they’re trying to make, share thoughts, feelings, and concerns – but they also may not, there are no expectations for them. “Sometimes it helps just to listen to others; they may pick up tips and advice. “Just being in a safe confidential and compassionate space with others that ‘know’ can speak volumes when we perhaps have no words.” The group meet on Saturdays in our Erdington site’s Living Well Centre. After attending sessions at the hospice, the hope is that members will continue to meet up with each other to offer mutual support and company. If you’re interested in joining the group or would like some more information on the upcoming sessions, please call 0121 465 2000 and ask to speak to a member of the Wellbeing Team who will be able to support you.

Today, we want to thank the team at Chung Ying Cantonese Restaurant and Vibe Corporate Events for hosting a fantastic quiz and music night last week. The evening was brilliant, with a great atmosphere created by the live music, wonderful food and people all supporting Birmingham Hospice. We are delighted that the event raised an amazing £1,866! This fantastic amount could fund 22 nurse visits to patients in their homes, so they can be cared for in the place of their choice. Donations are so important to us at Birmingham Hospice and support from companies hosting events like this makes a big difference. Thank you so much to Will, Neil and Simon from Chung Ying for helping us make every moment matter. Our Children’s Healing and Therapeutic Support (CHATS) Team, which supports children and young people when a loved one is poorly or has died, recently hosted a special peer support group entitled Gruesome Grief. With Halloween approaching, it was a good opportunity to explore ‘scary’ feelings. Grief can bring many fears and worries so the activities enabled creative exploration of the children's fears and how they can express their feelings healthily. The children engaged with the spooky activities and left with a few treats but no tricks! For more about the CHATS Team and the support they offer, please visit 👉 https://bit.ly/3S2oMQN
