Southampton will soon be host to a ground-breaking photography exhibition that delves into the complex and often overlooked issue of colourism. With images taken by renowned local live music and documentary photographer Nosa Malcom, this exhibition aims to challenge perceptions and spark conversations about the profound impact of colourism on communities across the globe. Through a series of powerful images, Black History Month South in partnership with Arts Council England and will explore the nuanced ways in which colourism manifests in Black, White, and Mixed-Race communities. Beyond the superficial stereotypes, the exhibition will reveal the deep-rooted cultural, social, and economic disparities that arise from this prejudice. Black History Month South is proud to announce the official launch event of this year’s Black History Month, scheduled for September 23rd at St. Mary’s Fire Station in Southampton. The theme for this year, “Reclaiming the Narrative”, and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. Our keynote speaker on the day is the esteemed Festus Akinbusoye, the first black Police & Crime Commissioner. As a prominent figure in community leadership and an advocate for social justice, Mr. Akinbusoye will bring invaluable insights and reflections on the importance of reclaiming and reshaping the narratives that define Black history and identity in Britain. We are honored to welcome back Aflo the Poet as our special guest. Known for her compelling and evocative and entertaining spoken word performances, Aflo’s artistry captures the essence of the Black experience, resonating deeply with audiences and enriching the cultural dialogue.
