According to the US Department of Labor, the average cost of a bad hire is up to 30% of the employee's first-year earnings. But bad hirers are not bad people, they are unproductive people. Firing and rehiring comes with both time and capital cost. Engendering productivity through corporate strategy is a more effective way to manage teams. At BlackCrest, in our vision to support founders of all stages with quality legal services, we have put together some strategies that can help founders. The strategies can be found in the deck below. Remember that you only fail when you stop trying. We are rooting for you and your team. Have a great weekend. The BlackCrest Team.

The Economy is literarily trying to kill businesses in Nigeria. Here are some Pro Tips On increasing Profitability as a Business in Nigeria 1, Increase your margins You can do this by increasing the price or actively reducing the Cost of Good Sold (COGS). Either way, in an uncertain economy like ours, everyone understands when prices of goods or services go up. Leverage this to your advantage. 2, Improve operations There may be some bad debts or credit that is written-off to focus on the performing ones. Figure out a way to reduce or completely remove all such customers from the system. The overall impact will affect your bottom-line positively. Change suppliers if you can get the same quality for a lower price, negotiate with middle-men and cut down all expenses that don’t actively add present or future value to your business. 3, Leverage partnerships Some people are just hearing about what you do for the first time and would probably have been customers since last year. Partner with organizations who have a large chunk of their members falling within your target audience. Agree on a commission that doesn’t impact your margin and onboard as many of them as possible. 4, Strategic Marketing Place your ads strategically in places where you have a lot of your target audience. It may be Radio, TV or Newspapers. Figure out the one that suits you and measure conversion for a period before switching. In all you do, keep trying. Bad economic situations come and go. Only resilient businesses survive when the going is good and bad. I am rooting for you. Osita of BlackCrest www.blackcrest.africa The one-stop legal shop for startups in Africa.

On Taxes for Nigerian Startups Should A Grant be Treated As An Income That is Taxable Under Nigerian laws? I got this question from a founder and decided to discuss it here for the benefit of other founders. Startups are subject to several taxes in Nigeria which include: The Companies Income Tax Act The Capital Gains Tax The VAT Stamp Duty Education Tax PAYE During assessment, a company is meant to file their statement of accounts that show profit and loss as a basis for the amount of companies income tax they are liable to pay. It is interesting to note that a grant awarded by the Government of Nigeria can qualify as income for the purpose of tax assessment. However, under the FIRS - Tax Implication of The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), apparently the grant can be used by the reporting company to reduce the cost of sales or its expenses. The taxpayer is the one that chooses whether to include it or not. There is no legal obligation to include it as an income in your profit and loss. But where you include it, that income shall be taxed accordingly. Key thing to remember is that Companies Income Taxes apply to profit and not just income. The law does not levy the Company Income Tax on a company that is struggling (not making profit). As a startup, where you have grants and losses through the financial year, such grants will generally not qualify as Income for Companies Income Tax purposes. This insight is brought to you by BlackCrest, a top startup- law firm in Nigeria. I am rooting for you. Osita of BlackCrest www.blackcrest.africa Follow me for more updates like this.
