About us
The Black Mental Health and Wellbeing Alliance is a collective of individuals with lived experience and grassroots organisations in the mental health sector, with a primary focus on tackling racial inequalities that disproportionately impact Black people. As an Alliance, we have initiated the Black Mental Health Manifesto to gather recommendations for enhancing Black mental healthcare into an accessible document. Our objective is to inform and influence national policy and practice. The Manifesto serves as a convenient point of reference for the Government, health care professionals, those working in education, practitioners, policymakers and anyone involved in or accountable for instigating change. Through its creation, we are also creating a clear and robust system of accountability to build trust. Through collaboration, we can dismantle systemic barriers and develop a mental health system that genuinely meets the needs of all communities, including the Black community.

📣 📖 We’re proud to spotlight Black Grief and Healing, a powerful anthology co-edited by our very own Dr Yansie Rolston, one of the Black Mental Health and Wellbeing Alliance’s members. This book brings together stories from Black voices, sharing raw, honest reflections on grief, mental health, and the journey toward healing. In a world where the Black community’s mental health struggles are often overlooked, Black Grief and Healing offers a much-needed platform for these narratives, highlighting the complexities of Black pain and resilience. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, understanding, or solidarity, this anthology is a must-read for anyone committed to reclaiming and amplifying Black mental health stories. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackGriefAndHealing #ReclaimingNarratives #ProtectBlackMentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #BlackMentalHealthManifesto

We were invited by Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Hammersmith BID to raise awareness of our Manifesto at their Black History Month event earlier this month. It was a lovely day with entertainment, food and nice vibes. This Black History Month, in line with theme of Reclaiming Narratives, we’re focusing on mental health and the need to challenge harmful stereotypes and reclaim the narratives around Black mental health. For too long, Black communities have been underrepresented and misunderstood in the mental health system, leading to disparities in care and treatment. The Black Mental Health Manifesto aims to change this by centering the lived experiences of Black individuals and calling for systemic reform. It’s time we reclaim our stories, demand equity, and ensure that our voices shape the future of mental health services. 📍 The Black Mental Health Manifesto takes White City to meet Bashy! 🔥 A time was had last night at White City House! Members Kadra Abdinasir, Joden J. and Nikki Adebiyi took to the venue to listen in on an intimate and authentic conversation between Black British rapper, actor and legend Ashley ‘Bashy’ Thomas and Darcus Beese, former President and CEO of Island Records. We heard from both men about the similarities in their life experiences despite their 15-year age gap, as well as the cumulative mental health impact of microaggressions and being racially marginalised in the entertainment industry. Thomas’ latest album Being Poor Is Expensive explores themes of inequality, injustice, crime, social class, mental health and beyond. Beese’s recent memoir Rebel With A Cause is a complementary read as it paints a picture of a life characterised by similar issues. Check out Bashy’s new album and Beese’s book, and be inspired by their stories and successes, which are a testament to the possibilities available to Black men all over who need only the time, space, opportunity and support to flourish! #Bashy #BlackBoys #BeingPoorIsExpensive #WhiteCityHouse #MentalHealth #WorkingClass #Inequality

🫂 10th September is World Suicide Prevention Day. Together with our Alliance partner-member Project Soul Stride (led by Chris Frederick), we stand in solidarity with all those affected by suicide. This day serves as a powerful reminder that every life is precious, and every story matters. In the Black community, where voices have too often been silenced by stigma and fear, we must continue to speak up, reach out, and offer support. Let’s break the silence, extend a hand, and create safe spaces where our brothers and sisters can share their struggles without judgment. Remember, the smallest act of kindness can change a life. Whether it’s listening, sharing a resource, or simply letting someone know they’re not alone—together, we can make a difference. On this day, and every day, let’s commit to being the light in someone’s darkness. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #ProjectSoulStride #YouAreNotAlone #BreakingTheSilence #BlackMentalHealthManifesto #ProtectBlackMentalHealth
