As a consultancy, it would have been easy for us to read this article and feel annoyed, perturbed, angry, or perhaps even scared for the future of the industry and our organisation.
However, we agree with many opinions expressed in the article. Firstly, we must make a distinction that security consultancy usually has different objectives compared to general management consultancy. Nonetheless, we have been brought in to 'blame someone else if the solutions...go awry,' and we understand the reason for this. We can also understand the rationale behind a potential new law that would prevent the US government from contracting with firms that do business with the Chinese government. Mainly, we agree that the 'cult of disruption' has driven the false idea that change and improvement are the same thing. Good consultants do not enter an organisation to make change for change's sake.
When Blacksmiths are invited into an organisation to understand its security management needs, threat profile, insider risk, and digital security vulnerabilities, we take a holistic and culturally focused approach. Change can be jarring for many, and gaining an understanding not only of your business but also of your people's needs often means making only slight tweaks and improvements to existing processes, procedures, and ways of working. Small but meaningful adjustments can provide highly impactful differences with minimal disruption.
We love articles like this as they spark internal debate, foster innovation, and remind us of what is important. We support organisations in achieving their objectives while protecting all their assets, not by enforcing change, but by enhancing what is already in place.
