We are bringing our climate tech innovation expertise, to Blenheim Estate’s long history of forestry and estate management to tackle climate change-related land and farming issues affecting the UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌲 This first-of-a-kind project uses a multidisciplinary approach to solve issues such as the shortage of tree stock, changes in soil conditions and long-term carbon storage. 🔎 Amazing to look back to the start of COP28 UAE two weeks ago… 🚸 I shared live on BBC News the challenge set down by the Exectuive Secretary of the United Nations, Simon Stiell. In his opening remarks he talked about how for too long we have only been taking baby steps in the fight to stop #climatechange and now was the time for real progress. ⛽️ Two weeks on and some are disappointed that the final negotiated text didn’t include the “phase out” of fossil fuels - but it does include “transition away”. Considering fossil fuels were not mentioned in COP proceeding’s texts until COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference and 2 years later 100% of parties agreed to transition away; this feels like progress! 🗞️ The The Economist has pointed out that this is the first time the root cause of climate change has actually been addressed (link in comments) - let’s hope that COP29 Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 builds on that momentum. 🌽 It would have been nice to see more progress on #naturebasedsolutions for #carbonremoval on article 6 negotiations and to see agreement on agricultural practices, which has been pushed back to May 2024. 🎉 However, in all it has been great to play a small part, to raise the profile of #biochar as a long-term #carbonsequestration technology that is ready to scale today!

🎉 That’s a wrap 🎉 It has been an amazing two week at 🌏 COP28 UAE 🇦🇪 talking about #biochar and its potential as a #carbonremoval technology. 🗞️We started at the inaugural COP28UAE Business & Philanthropy Climate Forum which was brilliantly MC’d by Harry A H Amos. I was also on the BBC News live covering outcomes from day 1. 🐼 I was given a private tour of a WWF #bluecarbon mangrove restoration project by Arabella Willing and it was great to hear about the power of restoring natural ecosystems in the #climatechallenge. 🌽 A fantastic panel and talk was given about biochar and its role in battling climate change with representatives of Silal, Emirates Bio Farm EBF, International Biochar Initiative and UK Biochar Research Centre (UKBRC) from ▪️Shamal Mohammed ▪️, Yazen Al Kodmani, Wendy Lu Maxwell-Barton and Ondrej Masek. 🇦🇪 I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Expo City Dubai team Anton Sotnezov, Jeff Kersey MSc, Mai Shalaby, Liliana Slowinska, Matt Brown and also to Medhat Al-Barbour who tended to our plot! 🇬🇧 Finally a big thank you to the A Healthier Earth team specifically Jenny Hughes, Tom Kearney-Mitchell and Kelsey Woor. End of day 2 @ COP28 UAE and what another busy day of announcements while also making great connections with the CSOs of Google and Microsoft! A round up of some of today’s highlights are: 🌾 The UAE has partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on a $200 million research and scaling initiative and become the first MENA country to join CGIAR 🌽 COP28 UAE, together with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) supported by the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, launched the Action Agenda on Regenerative Landscapes. This will see leading food and agriculture organizations join forces to scale regenerative agriculture, transitioning 160 million hectares to regenerative agriculture by 2030, accompanied by USD$2.2 billion in future investment, and engaging 3.6 million farmers world-wide. 🇦🇪 Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action - more than 130 prime ministers and presidents today signed the declaration, he first of its kind commitment to adapt and “transform” food systems as part of broader climate action.

Last night our Chief R&D Officer Alastair Collier was on BBC News discussing the announcements from day one of #COP28 and what he’d like to see from the rest of the summit.   In the interview Alastair talks about the need to look at our food systems and how we feed our growing population to achieve the Paris Agreement, and how biochar can help us do that.
