Exciting progress from the UK's Fleet Solid Support (FSS) programme for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary! We’re thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Preliminary Design Review (PDR), a key milestone in the evolution of the FSS ships. This accomplishment was made possible through close collaboration between the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), with Navantia UK as the prime contractor, and BMT. As the leaders of the functional design phase, BMT’s role has been pivotal in ensuring the robustness and maturity of the FSS design, which now moves forward to the detailed design phase, with construction set to begin in 2025. This achievement underscores BMT’s deep expertise in ship design, and draws upon our extensive technical experience across a spectrum of naval programmes, including the QEC, Tide Class, Norwegian Logistics Support Vessel, and Type 31 Frigate. It also highlights the social and economic benefits the FSS programme is delivering to the UK, from knowledge and job creation, to advancing industrial capabilities. Our innovative designs integrate cutting-edge technologies, including energy-saving systems, emission-reducing solutions, and future fuel provisions, aligning with the UK's carbon reduction goals. This reflects our ongoing commitment to modernising naval operations while driving sustainability and efficiency in every aspect of the design. Catriona Savage, Programme Director at BMT, said: "The successful completion of the PDR is a testament to the collaborative efforts between BMT and Navantia UK, the Prime Contractor, which has driven the FSS programme forward. This milestone sets the stage for delivering advanced support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, enhancing the Royal Navy's operational readiness for global missions, and contributing to the UK's industrial and economic growth." As our Naval Architects, Engineers, Designers, Integrated Logistics Support team, and Project Managers collectively continue to provide design support, safety and environmental case reports, and development of the through life support artefacts, we are proud to be part of this landmark programme for the United Kingdom. Special thanks to our talented team, led by Catriona Savage, Daniel Smye-Rumsby, and Simon J. who have played a pivotal role in driving the FSS programme forward with dedication and expertise.
