‘What do diamonds do for people?’ Our Brand Ambassador, Lupita Nyong’o, sought to answer this question by visiting South Africa and Namibia, where diamonds are a key source of wealth and opportunity, providing jobs, local procurement, taxes, and support for biodiversity conservation. Her journey began at the Venetia Mine in South Africa, where over 4,000 people are employed. Lupita also explored the Venetia Limpopo Game Reserve, a conservation success story that’s creating wildlife habitats and offering future tourism and livelihood opportunities. In Namibia, she visited NDTC (Namibian Diamond Trading Company) and Namdeb, both 50:50 joint ventures between the Namibian Government and De Beers. NDTC sorts and values rough diamonds, while Namdeb discovers some of the world’s highest-value gems. Lupita Nyong’o’s journey wrapped up with a visit to the EntreprenHer programme and the #BeFree Youth Campus, both funded by De Beers. These initiatives empower women entrepreneurs and support youth development, creating sustainable futures for communities across Southern Africa. #EntreprenHer, in collaboration with UN Women and local governments, has supported over 2,600 women micro-entrepreneurs in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana since 2017, with plans to help 1,500 more. The #BeFree Youth Campus, founded by former First Lady of Namibia Monica Geingos, provides holistic services for youth, from mental health support to legal guidance and skills development, addressing critical issues like Gender-Based Violence and empowering young people. 💎 Lucara is thrilled to announce the recovery of an exceptional 2,492 carat diamond from its Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana. This remarkable find, one of the largest rough diamonds ever unearthed, was detected and recovered by the Company's Mega Diamond Recovery (“MDR”) X-ray Transmission (“XRT”) technology, installed in 2017 to identify and preserve large, high-value diamonds. ⚒️ The stone was recovered from the processing of EM/PK(S) kimberlite, the dominant ore type that Lucara will continue to target during the first years of the Company’s underground mining operations. 📊 This discovery underscores Karowe's reputation as a world-class asset and reaffirms Lucara's position as a leading producer of large, exceptional diamonds. A Unique Opportunity to Explore Rare Gemstones I recently attended the Bonas Group tender for cut stones, where I had the pleasure of meeting Tim from the Bonas Group. He efficiently guided us through the tender, showcasing an impressive selection of stones. Bi-Colour Tanzanite: A Rare Find One of the standout pieces was the bi-color tanzanite. These stones are incredibly rare, thanks to vanadium and iron impurities that create a stunning contrast of colors. What set this tender apart was the variety of gemstones available for bidding. Unlike typical tenders, this auction featured an array of gemstones, including rubies, tsavorites, and tourmalines. The tourmalines, in particular, caught my eye with their top-notch quality and vibrant colors. Seeing both bi-color and single-color varieties up close was a real treat. Seeing our ICA Gemlab reports featured at the auction was also gratifying. This reinforces the crucial importance of transparency and authenticity in the gemstone industry. Over 1309 dedicated individuals from Antwerp's diamond community, a record turnout, visited the AWDC office to cast their votes for their favorite candidates.
