  • We’re excited to be attending the UKSPA - The United Kingdom Science Park Association 2025 Spring Conference this week at Exeter Science Park!   As the sector continues to push the boundaries of research, collaboration, and technological advancement, it’s critical that the spaces supporting this work evolve too. This year’s agenda tackles key themes shaping the future of science parks, from sustainable infrastructure and net zero carbon science to the role of incubation ecosystems and the funding that supports them. We’re looking forward to insightful discussions on how these factors will drive innovation and resilience in the sector, and how we can continue to grow these valuable hotspots throughout the UK.   Representing our team at the conference is Associate Director, Nicholas Moore. If you're attending, be sure to say hello!   #UKSPA #scienceparks #innovation #sustainablescience #morethandesign

  • As cities grow and evolve, the need for future-proof developments has never been greater. Royal Arsenal Riverside, West Quay, stands as a case study in how to build resilient communities that can thrive amid global change and urbanisation. Designed and delivered by Bond Bryan for BERKELEY HOMES (EAST THAMES) LIMITED, this project has transformed Woolwich’s historic riverside into a dynamic, adaptable neighbourhood built to support modern city living.    At the heart of this development are 764 high-quality apartments integrated with street-level retail, cafés, and flexible public spaces. Green podium gardens and landscaped courtyards also provide vital outdoor green space, supporting these social areas and encouraging residents to interact with nature in the heart of the city. These elements create not just homes, but a connected, self-sustaining community designed to evolve with the needs of its residents.    Resilience is also built into the fabric of the development. Sustainability features such as brown roofs and innovative construction techniques help mitigate the effects of poor air quality and urban heat - ensuring a healthier environment for both people and the planet. The project’s focus on high-quality materials and adaptable infrastructure ensures that West Quay will remain a thriving, liveable space for generations to come.    As urbanisation accelerates, Royal Arsenal Riverside sets a benchmark for future developments - proving that forward-thinking design can create communities that are not just built for today, but for the decades ahead.    Read more about how this project is shaping the future on our website. https://lnkd.in/dGsRMSjB #SustainableLiving #UrbanRegeneration #Biodiversity #SustainableCities #MoreThanDesign

In the 1960s, anthropologist Edward T. Hall put numbers to something we all feel but rarely quantify—our personal space bubble. His research on proxemics shed light on these invisible ‘laws’ of social behaviour and sparked decades of exploration into how we navigate social space. As architects and designers, our role goes beyond shaping buildings—we shape experiences, interactions, and communities. Understanding human nature isn’t just theoretical; it’s fundamental to designing spaces that truly work for people. In this article, we explore how proxemic mapping can be a tool for architects, helping us craft spaces that feel intuitive, dynamic, and alive. #architecture #designforthefuture #innovation #proxemics

  • Maidstone Borough Council secures planning permission on Springfield Place. The development is a Landmark in Sustainable Housing with an aim of providing much needed homes for the borough’s residents. We are proud to unveil Springfield Place, a transformative residential development. Designed by Bond Bryan, with project management and cost consultancy from Airey Miller, and planning advice and management by consultants Vail Williams. This ambitious project aims to provide 103 high-quality homes on the site of the former Kent County Council reference library. Whilst funding from the Social Housing Grant is still to be confirmed by Homes England, the project could represent a key milestone in the Council’s commitment to delivering truly affordable rented homes as part of its council housebuilding programme. Springfield Place, located adjacent to the A229 Royal Engineers Road, has been meticulously designed to balance modernity, sustainability, and respect for its local heritage. Following the demolition of the former library tower in 2022, this derelict brownfield site has been reimagined to accommodate two apartment blocks, comprising one, two, and three-bedroom homes. Every apartment will be dual aspect, with access to a balcony or terrace, ensuring high-quality living spaces for residents. A Collaborative Vision for Affordable Housing: The project has been developed as part of Maidstone Borough Council’s adopted Capital Programme, which prioritises affordable rented housing alongside private rented and market sale homes. The Council has assembled its own development team to oversee the project, ensuring control over quality and alignment with community needs. Sustainability and Placemaking at the Forefront: The landscape-led design incorporates sustainable urban drainage systems, biodiverse roofs, and a 47% biodiversity net gain. The development also features high-quality public spaces, including a central plaza, enhanced woodland areas, and improved pedestrian and cycle links that reconnect the site with the wider community. Key Features of Springfield Place: 103 apartments: A mix of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom homes, all with private outdoor spaces. Sustainability: Achieving a 47% biodiversity net gain, with features such as biodiverse roofs and sustainable drainage systems. Connectivity: Pedestrian and cycle links enhancing access to surrounding neighbourhoods and public amenities. Springfield Place is a testament to what can be achieved as it serves as a model for sustainable, inclusive development. It will help address the critical need for affordable housing in Maidstone, reducing the number of families currently on the borough’s housing register waiting for a home. #SustainableHousing #AffordableHomes #UrbanDesign #Placemaking #Morethandesign

It was a pleasure to visit the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute this week to tour the space and collect long-term feedback on the facility and its performance as a cutting-edge research environment. With the building opening during lockdown, it was fantastic to see occupancy returning to full strength and the spaces being actively used as we envisioned. The project is a strong example of how shared priorities across client, design, and contractual teams can deliver lasting impact by preserving seemingly minor design details which all add up to have a big impact on the every-day experience of the space. It was excellent to see these details playing a key role in the building’s long-term success, and we’ve walked away with a lot of good feedback to reflect on. These visits are essential for understanding how our designs support the people and work they were created for, helping us refine our approach for future projects. A huge thank you to Brian Williams for taking us around and helping us collect this feedback! #closingtheperformancegap #POE #cambridge #circularthinking #morethandesign

A fantastic achievement this week - as planning permission has been granted for Sheffield Forgemasters’ new Machining Facility - a major step forward for both the project and the future of high-performance engineering. Playing a critical role in nuclear defence and advanced manufacturing. The launch of the New Machining Facility represents a major milestone in reinforcing their operational capabilities and strategic importance. By expanding their footprint, the facility strengthens Sheffield Forgemasters’ ability to support the UK’s nuclear defence sector and enhance its long-term resilience within a competitive global market. This facility serves as a model for future industrial projects, demonstrating that high-performance engineering can be aligned with ecological mindfulness. The project is a testament to our shared commitment to sustainability, responsible innovation, and a greener future for Sheffield. Craig Fisher, Programmes Director at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “This planning agreement will see construction of the largest machining hall of its kind in the UK, and regeneration of a prominent brownfield site in the city’s industrial centre. What we are creating in the centre of Britain’s historical industrial heartland is unparalleled in the UK and will not only de-risk supply for the UK’s AUKUS defence programme, but it will also deliver technologically advanced and rewarding working facilities for our employees.” A huge congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life: Sheffield Forgemasters | Arup | JLL | McDowell Machining Technologies | WaldrichSiegen #advancedmanufacturing #sheffield #planning #regeneration

Sheffield Forgemasters has been granted planning permission to build a landmark 30,000 m2 machining facility on brownfield land in the City’s Meadowhall district. The new facility on Weedon Street will form one of the world’s most advanced large machining facilities, to support manufacture for the UK defence programmes. With work to prepare the site already underway, the building will cover a space equal to 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools and will contain some of the largest and most advanced five-axis Vertical Turning Lathes ever produced. Plans for the new machining facility detail a main building with a circa 272.5 x 110 metre footprint, standing 32 metres tall, located close to the River Don and designed to complement the historic look of the company’s existing buildings. Adjoining the main construction is a second, proposed 3,500 m2 building, with a state-of-the-art test-house facility and a dedicated training area, to transfer vital skills to the next generation of engineers. Machine tools specialist, WaldrichSiegen, is building a series of large Vertical Turning Lathes and associated machines for the machining hall, which will be installed and maintained by McDowell Machining Technologies. Sheffield Forgemasters’ 13,000 tonne forging line and proposed machine shop will create a new generation of engineers and designers trained to work with Industry 4.0 technologies. The machine shop project team consists of Arup, which handled the ecological and travel assessments, Bond Bryan Architects, and JLL, which acted on behalf of Sheffield Forgemasters for the site acquisition and planning submissions.
