Lots of thought provoking and challenging contributions at yesterday's #LSDC event 'Creating a Social Value in London’s Built Environment'. Alan Wright was there from BPTW and reflecting on the importance of understanding the inherent #Social Value that exists in a place before development particularly resonated with a significant number of very powerful testimonies not least the presentation of Dr. Patria Roman-Velazquez, Founding Chair, Latin Elephant, & Senior Lecturer in Innovations in Research, King's College London and comments from people from across London highlighting how they were "listened to but not heard", and a sense of 'social value greenwashing' where proposed #social value is given undue weight without regard for what is being lost. Justin Kelly and Neill Campbell had a busy two days in #Liverpool for the #Housing Community Summit, where discussions focused on the future of housing delivery. It is clear that the challenge lies not only in meeting the new aspirational housing #targets but also ensuring the quality and sustainability of current existing housing stock. It was reassuring to hear from Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Energy Consumers, on The Labour Party plans for #retrofitting #social and #council #homes, “taking an area-based approach, aligning the need to maintain, improve and renew our social housing stock with the need to upgrade and #decarbonise our homes.” With a pledge of £6.6bn to retrofit five million homes and a strong focus on decarbonisation, the collaboration between housing associations, councils, and key stakeholders will be crucial. We are looking forward to the Housing Design Awards Ceremony tomorrow! Olivia Pfeil, BPTW Associate, will be attending the ceremony where we are proud to have two schemes shortlisted. Rochester Riverside Phases 2 & 3 form part of our design work for Countryside Partnerships and The Hyde Group with Medway Council to create a new destination neighbourhood of 1,400 new homes, connecting Rochester to the River Medway. The first three phases provided 656 new homes and mixed use spaces, drawing inspiration from the historic Medway area. Alkerden Gateway in Ebbsfleet Garden City, designed for Westerhill Homes by Chartway, is a 67 home scheme with bespoke customisable elements. Congratulations to all of the shortlisted projects and we look forward to the winner’s announcements tomorrow. “If we want a world that serves us all, we have to be in those spaces making those decisions. We have to design it, we have to build it. For me, that is a huge driver.” BPTW is supporting the Build Your Future in Housing campaign from The Housing Forum’s Futures Network to boost the profile of housing as a career path. As a Futures Network member, Hayley Grace, Architect at BPTW, is working with the rest of the team to explore ways of solving the housing industry’s skill shortages through a series of podcasts. In the latest podcast episode, Hayley meets with Charlotte Hollands from BMJ Architects to discuss Charlotte’s experience as an Architect with ADHD. Charlotte offers insight into the importance of representation, adjustments that can be made for those who are neurodiverse, and how encouraging inclusivity and diverse ways of thinking can elevate our built environment.
