Unveiling 'Roots', an astonishing new mural at MAPA Cultural Arts Centre by street artist Peachzz and the MAPA community 🎨 The history of MAPA is deeply intertwined with music, art, black history and human connection. Inspired by and located at MAPA, the mural captures the essence of unity within the local community, and reflects the diverse voices and shared experiences that define MAPA’s collective identity. 'Roots' features depictions of Newby Square flats, a vibrant scene from Peoples Day - an important event in the MAPA calendar - and popular activities such as music, pool, art and crafts. The title 'Roots' was inspired by Mikey Roots, a revered local musician, community leader and figure of immense respect who is honoured and celebrated within the piece as a representative of the MAPA community. Peachzz told us: “It's been so nice to work on this project with MAPA. There's been so many wonderful people that I've met throughout the process and I've enjoyed learning in depth what this mural means to the community, to MAPA and what it represents - it's been really amazing." Paul Bose, CEO of MAPA Community Centre, commented: "‘Roots’ is a welcome addition to MAPA that celebrates our vibrant history and is a message of unity. It features imagery that helps capture MAPA’s history, and tells stories that are important to our community, such as our People’s Day event. A special tribute is also paid to the late Mikey Roots, whose dedication to young people, music, entrepreneurial spirit, and influence made a lasting impact on the Bradford community. His unwavering commitment continues to inspire, and we are deeply grateful to his family for their support and involvement in honouring his legacy through this mural." 'Roots' is the latest artwork in the BD:Walls project, a collaboration between Bradford 2025 and Bradford Council that will transform the district’s blank walls into vibrant canvases. This news comes with an exciting opportunity to be part of the showcase celebrating the best of the UK’s new music scene and perform in two different cities – Bradford and London – next year. ❗️New Music Biennial 2025 is looking for short works of no longer than 15 minutes that can be performed in a range of settings. ❗️ The festival aims to celebrate the pushing edges of contemporary music across all styles and genres, from classical and chamber opera, to jazz, folk and electronic. Look out for A Portrait of Us on billboards across Bradford from today! We’re celebrating the unsung heroes of Bradford in a brand new outdoor exhibition, featuring images by world-renowned photographer Aida Muluneh. A Portrait of Us celebrates local heroes form Bradford and three other UK cities: Belfast, Cardiff and Glasgow. Aida’s powerful photographs pay tribute to the people who work quietly but tirelessly to make their part of the world a better place. We’re making sure these community superstars get the recognition they deserve by installing their portraits on billboards across Bradford, before the project concludes in a major exhibition at Impressions Gallery in January 2025. The Bradford heroes featured are: Alyshea (pictured) - A nationally award-winning doctor with disabilities who works hard to care for patients with mental health problems at Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust. Carol - A health advocate who works tirelessly within Bradford’s Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities - including through Bradford’s Black Health forum, which promotes health and wellbeing among African and Afro Caribbean residents. Julie - A climate activist and one of the most active members of Bingley Morsbags group. She’s made hundreds of free bags out of donated materials – saving tonnes of material from landfill and reducing our reliance on plastic bags. Shannon (pictured) - Runs a food bank and a food waste shop, as well as family events and clubs supporting vulnerable adults. She’s introduced countless families to new cultural experiences, created jobs and built a truly inclusive community. Riffut - Worked as a social worker in Bradford for 35 years, caring for some of Bradford’s most vulnerable families. Stafford - One of the founders of the Bradford West Indian Parents’ Association, which helped integrate new arrivals from the Caribbean to the UK, and is now the Deacon of Westgate Baptist Church in Manningham.
