A patient with Parkinson’s disease successfully received deep brain stimulation (DBS) at The Wellington Hospital this week for a severe movement disorder. This is a real landmark in our commitment to providing access to the very latest brain surgery technologies. A potentially life-changing therapy, DBS treats Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia by delivering electrical signals to precise areas of the brain from an implanted pacemaker. Mr Erlick Pereira, Consultant Neurosurgeon, led the pioneering surgery on 14th May in The Wellington Hospital’s state-of-the-art operating theatre, with its modern visualisation suite, including intra-operative MRI and CT. Using a minimally invasive surgical technique, with little to no hair removal, Mr Pereira made a two-centimetre incision in the scalp and two-millimetre hole in the skull. He applied titanium mini-plates to avoid unsightly bulges, carrying out the procedure in under an hour. The expert multi-disciplinary team also included consultant neurologists, Professor Francesca Morgante and Professor Mark Edwards; neuropsychiatrist, Dr Mike Dilley and neuroanaesthetist, Dr Audrey Tan. The treatment forms part of The Wellington Hospital’s comprehensive functional neurosurgery and neurorehabilitation service for patients with movement disorders, pain, brain and spinal injuries – including progressive neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease. A special thank you to Boston Scientific, Brainlab, and Brain & Mind ltd for their assistance in completing this historic case. #HCAHealthcareUK #Parkinsons #DeepBrainStimulation

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting our first medicolegal training day for some of our associates at the Irwin Mitchell offices in London. 📑 It was incredibly insightful and helpful for everyone to be able to discuss the medicolegal process so openly among clinical experts, solicitors and barristers. 👨⚖️ Special mention to Dr David Okai for taking part in the mock trial and for dealing so well with the pressure that was very real! A huge thanks to Debbie Eaton, Sofie Toft, Sarah Griggs from Irwin Mitchell, Stephen Cottrell, Robert Hunter and Christopher Walker from Devereux Chambers for sharing their knowledge and time. We will definitely be doing this again... anyone interested in taking part, please let us know!

🌟 We're very proud of the work that Mike Dilley (our co-director), Prof Khalida Ismail and our associates, Dr David Okai and Dr Raymont, are carrying out in the NHS. Following a US study that suggested early use of antidepressants post-injury may prevent depression, they are now leading a large UK trial aiming to validate this. We are looking forward to seeing the results! 🧠 - More information here: https://lnkd.in/dVpFfTWa #BrainInjuryResearch #MentalHealthSupport 💪 https://lnkd.in/eZXTU2C5

Rehabilitation rebuilds lives that have been impacted by illness, injury or hospitalisation. But shockingly, depending on where you live in the UK, you might not be able to access any rehabilitation services at all. That's why we support the Right to Rehab campaign. Please sign their petition now and help make it mandatory that there is a rehabilitation lead and strategy in every hospital and health board. Thank you.
